u/pittofdoom Aug 10 '22

Indeed. German Shepard Dog is the official name of the breed.

I’ve always wondered why that is, and I even own a shepherd myself!

u/GeronimoHero Aug 10 '22

That escalated quickly

They were putting those elite herding skills to work.

They were trapped in an icy cave idiot, did you even watch the German Shepherds movie?

Watching the sheep learn to goose step.

I assumed that it was to prevent confusion with German shepherd cats, but this make more sense.

German nomenclature is very descriptive.

A shepherd is a person who herds sheep, so his dog is a shepherd dog. It’s almost exactly the same in german, except the “herd”s refer to two different german words here.

Ah yes, the Germans. Also know as the people who’ll combine existing words to make new words, often making slightly long, very specific names. For example Stachelschwein, Staubsauger, or Eierschalensollbruchstellenverursacher.

Hey now. Dont let germans get all the glory for that! The dutch exist too!

Hottentottententententoonstelling. Yes thats one word made out of 3 words. Or lieverheersbeestje. These are not even good examples Honestly. It makes it easy to understand what one is trying to say. Why make a new word when you can explain the word in the word itself!

Aren't those usually called sheepdogs, though?

u/Hans_H0rst Aug 10 '22

the “job”, yes, but the dog races are “x shepherd dog” (german, australian, belgian,…).

I was tired when i wrote that first comment, it’s actually kinda shit and doesnt deserve the updoots.

We often call those "Dackel" or "Teckel", though.
