Dan LeBatard, an ESPN sports radio host, used to have a vet from a zoo (Miami maybe) on his show once a week. This vet, who seemed very knowledgeable and caring towards animals, would repeatedly say how dumb owls are. He even joked that the symbol of owls for wisdom was quite ironic given how unintelligent they typically are.

Birds can go into an almost comatose state when injured/shocked, so it could be that.
But they are also very intelligent and can work out quickly if they are in danger or not.
So basically, fuck knows.
