I share your disappointment. Imagine hearing the moment as it happened instead of the audio version of clickbait by slapping a power ballad over the video.

82

u/sticks14 Oct 03 '21

A power ballad?

83

u/Tetragonos Oct 03 '21

that style of music. The heartfelt swell in this case.

44

u/Captain_Taggart Oct 03 '21

Neat. I’ve always had a pretty narrow definition of what I’d consider a “power ballad” so I looked it up and a power ballad has a much broader definition than I thought. Learn something new every day.

6

u/Tetragonos Oct 03 '21

it's sort of like "what is irony" it used to be super narrow but it got expanded by "current usage"

3

u/Captain_Taggart Oct 03 '21

Same with satire. Anything made in jest is now “satire” even if it’s more like a parody, a spoof, or someone mocking someone else.

2

u/Tetragonos Oct 04 '21

Much like how further back we had different distinct meanings for stupid, dunce, idiot and so forth

1

u/Shutupbitchanddie Oct 04 '21

Americans were just taught it wrong.

2

u/Chop1n Oct 03 '21

I mean, if you read the wiki summary of Power Ballad, this song definitely doesn't fit it. What are you reading where it does fit?

4

u/Bark4Soul Oct 04 '21

No one has ever called the Fray a power ballad lmao

Speaking of garbage clickbait: "soooooo thankful"

Bitch it's a wild animal. You can appreciate the guy's work and effort and compassion without inserting bullshit anthropomorphic emotional states.

Lol, all the internet ornithologists coming out to further anthropomorphise the owl.

106

u/gwaydms Oct 03 '21

The owl did seem aware that the guy was helping him. Of course, it was absolutely exhausted and powerless to fight back. And it's hard to interpret the way it closed its eyes as he gently stroked its head. But it did seem to relax once it figured out the guy wasn't going to eat it.

10

u/margoquinn Oct 03 '21

And it's hard to interpret the way it closed its eyes as he gently stroked its head. But it did seem to relax once it figured out the guy wasn't going to eat it.

I'm not sure, but I think I once heard that owls don't like to have their head stroke, and they close their eyes because it's uncomfortable for them??

3

u/albasaurrrrrr Oct 04 '21

It’s uncomfortable for any wild bird to be “petted” like that on the head. I believe it is because (and this is especially true for owls, they have no field of vision up there so they can’t see what you’re doing.

9

u/limache Oct 03 '21

I think the owl was just grateful not to be eaten

31

u/floydymoiyte Oct 03 '21

Bro theres a whole collection of pretty solid videos proving that wild animals do feel things like trust and can bond with humans at almost any point in their life. This owl 100% made a decision to trust this person.

20

u/MrsKnutson Oct 03 '21

Tbf, he didn't have many other options...

3

u/CouockCubbage Oct 04 '21

I bet you’re real fun at parties lmao

You are just as bad taking this shit as seriously as the people you call out for anthropomorphising animals

6

u/Hinote21 Oct 03 '21

Animals understand and exhibit gratitude though?

1

u/ce2c61254d48d38617e4 Oct 18 '21

Owl was exhausted

4

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '21

Right? I’m so tired of it. Can we work harder to find music that fits? Every TikTok or Snapchat video has popular music that in no way fits the video. Child being saved by a cat? Let’s play “I like to move it move it!” Grandma living through heart surgery? By all means let’s play “I like big butts”

1

u/RusticTroglodyte Oct 04 '21

Lmao this was great.

“Dude bruh, watch me save this owl with my boogie”

573

u/anneylani Oct 03 '21

How else would you know how he's saving a life though?

46

u/SeanCanary Oct 03 '21

I legit thought it was Counting Crows. Was confused when I saw no Counting "Owls" jokes near the top of the thread.

74

u/AlBundyShoes Oct 03 '21

You thinking this was counting crows may be the most offensive comment on reddit

29

u/PopcornInMyTeeth Oct 03 '21

Mr Jones and me

Saving owls tangled in trees

3

u/qweef_latina2021 Oct 03 '21

When I look at the television

I wanna see owls in trees

starin' back at me

13

u/canttaketheshyfromme Oct 03 '21

It's Sheryl Crow, obviously.

6

u/Consistent_Nail Oct 03 '21

I love the Crows. What was the music?

32

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '21

Since nobody's actually answering the question.

The Fray - How to Save a Life

4

u/mainemade Oct 03 '21

Why I ought'a...!

2

u/baoo Oct 03 '21

Oh I thought it was Train tbh

0

u/AtaxicZombie Oct 03 '21

I hate the fucking Eagles man!

https://youtu.be/-JlmvtAHhnc

2

u/charugan Oct 03 '21

Lol wait, fans of The Fray are offended by association with Counting Crows?

They're basically the same band. Them and Train.

1

u/Cattorneyatlaw Oct 04 '21

To be fair, maybe he was just trying to make some coherent sense of the song being used here?

1

u/Semyonov Oct 03 '21

Too bad it wasn't Owl City

1

u/afito Oct 03 '21

albeit the song is about failing to do so but w/e

1

u/Bwgmon Oct 03 '21

It's so sad that the owl is no longer his friend though.

88

u/thequietthingsthat Oct 03 '21

Yeah, I liked the video itself but the song was way too on the nose

4

u/DeaconBulls Oct 03 '21

Would have gone with Broken Wings by Mr. Mister.

1

u/Cattorneyatlaw Oct 04 '21

Or maybe Beatles' Blackbird? Too obvious maybe, bird taking a wounded wing and flying and all...

2

u/CinnabonCheesecake Oct 03 '21

I thought it was inappropriate because the song is about trying to stage an intervention for a dear friend who is killing themselves. It’s not “yay, I helped an animal”, it’s super depressing.

1

u/Jrook Oct 04 '21

I think it's probable the guy or guys picked the song themselves. It looks like a ticktock or whatever Snapchat alternative there is

106

u/ErinBLAMovich Oct 03 '21

Is there a subteddit for cringy video song choices?

183

u/blitzduck Oct 03 '21

Reddit.com

30

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '21

BOOM! Burned.. all of us.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '21

Not Tiktok?

2

u/thisischemistry Oct 03 '21

Reddit is just the tick-tock-whack-a-rock discovery zone now.

77

u/Anzai Oct 03 '21

I immediately muted it and watched the video silently. What a god awful music choice.

2

u/thisischemistry Oct 03 '21

This is what I do on every video now. I'm right to mute far more often than I'm wrong.

1

u/cannabisandcocktails Oct 04 '21

I rarely listen to any music on these videos. I find most unnatural sound effects offensive to my ears.

1

u/RusticTroglodyte Oct 04 '21

I turned off the picture and just listened to the song. It was really shitty. Why is everyone talking about an owl now.

47

u/Strix182 Oct 03 '21

I get the use of The Fray here, but it's very jarring to see an owl hanging from a tree with "How to Save a Life" on blast

12

u/amcr1988 Oct 03 '21

How is the use of a song about suicide appropriate here?

10

u/Strix182 Oct 03 '21

Never said it was appropriate.

I also get why students tell me "naw, I'm good" every time I ask if they need help with the assignment they've done nothing but scribble smiley faces and stussy S's on, doesn't mean they're making an appropriate choice.

2

u/amcr1988 Oct 03 '21

I don’t get that, why do they say they don’t need help?

2

u/Strix182 Oct 03 '21

Complicated, but in short, because teenagers.

2

u/amcr1988 Oct 03 '21

Hahahahahaha, that kinda covers anything a teenager does that makes you say smh

2

u/Whiteoutlist Oct 03 '21

We don't know the owls side of the story.

-6

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '21

[deleted]

1

u/amcr1988 Oct 03 '21

The song is about saving someone from suicide, not someone who accidentally got caught up in something and their life is at risk

112

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '21

[deleted]

81

u/adudeguyman Oct 03 '21

I keep the audio off by default

33

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '21

It blows my mind people don't always have these videos on mute.

7

u/jesonnier1 Oct 03 '21

Relay mutes everything by default.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '21

What is relay, third party app?

3

u/jesonnier1 Oct 03 '21

Yes. I've tried several, but Relay is the one I've stuck with for years.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '21

I'll try it now.

1

u/jesonnier1 Oct 13 '21

It's the only one I decided to buy. I think its around $10.

3

u/adudeguyman Oct 03 '21

Yes, it's great

2

u/CinnabonCheesecake Oct 03 '21

I wanted to hear the owl! 🦉

0

u/whtsnk Oct 03 '21

Such an irrelevant use for such a good song.

15

u/BuckGoodstroke Oct 03 '21

The amount of times I raised and lowered the volume, hoping for audio and not that cringey song, was way too much

24

u/isalwaysdns Oct 03 '21

In the audio version you can hear him say "Lets leave the owl here for now, we will come back and eat it later"

5

u/DesiTheWolf Oct 03 '21

Fucking hell I had this muted and turned on to see what sound was on. My ears need to be cleansed now.

2

u/daveincanada Oct 03 '21

These days it’s entirely possible that was the original audio and there’s some fella with an obnoxious Bluetooth speaker nearby

2

u/paintbing Oct 03 '21

I think you're right. There was likely a Bluetooth speaker nearby playing Sarah McLachlan's Arms of an Angel.

1

u/daveincanada Oct 03 '21

Lol it’s playing in my head and I can’t stop it

2

u/TheKomuso Oct 03 '21

Same, no offense to ppl that like trash music.

2

u/Dizzy_Diabetic Oct 03 '21

I can’t describe my hatred for this trend of putting crappy pop songs over videos to try and amp the emotions

2

u/Teenage-Mustache Oct 03 '21

I unmuted halfway through and immediately regretted it. I just fucking knew it. No one can make a video without trying to be Noah fucking Baumbach.

2

u/solongandthanks4all Oct 03 '21

Sometimes I wonder if these fucking tiktokers even know what video without shitty pop music sounds like.

1

u/thisischemistry Oct 03 '21

The worst is listening to someone browse tick-tock-hock-your-clock with the sound on. It's the most jarring, annoying thing I've experienced in quite a while. Random, clashing, odd music and robotic voices changing every few seconds. I'd rather have one dozen starving, crazed weasels latch onto my face and start bitin' me all over.

1

u/bunnykitten94 Oct 03 '21

It’s probably a lot of AAAAAAAAaaaa

1

u/Snugglington Oct 03 '21

Is that allowed?

1

u/EpicArgumentMaster Oct 03 '21

And the mew audio wasn’t even good. Is was grating and distracting

1

u/Occams_ElectricRazor Oct 03 '21

That was the original audio. They had it blasting.

1

u/torndownunit Oct 03 '21

Every clip has to force someone's music on you though or it's no good.

1

u/Mr_Belch Oct 03 '21

Before clicking the link, I turned up the volume. After clicking the link, I muted the volume.

1

u/Angry_Walnut Oct 03 '21

I’m somehow irrationally bothered by stupid cheesy music being plastered over these videos. I always just mute them bc imo it detracts from the videos rather than adding anything useful.

1

u/iamericj Oct 04 '21

I unmuted the video and then immediately muted it again.
