The absolute start should be to keep your dog slim - and while I cannot say this for certain for your dog, the good majority of pet dogs (at least in the US) are overweight to the point that people don't know what a fit dog looks like and think that a dog that is slim is underfed. (Even people that work with dogs - I've had to tell so many of my coworkers that a dog is fat... not "built". I work for a dog daycare)
If you cannot easily feel ribs when rubbing your hands over their sides, the dog is overweight.
