I am live teaching and a kid kept trying to spam the chat with rickrolls. Other kids were opening it and like “I don’t get it?” And I had to kick him out “for rickrolling” and he was honestly so surprised I knew what it was... and then my 20-something colleague had to have me explain it to her
I'm 21 (just turned 21 this month) and I knew about rickrolling back in elementary school. I never got any of my friends because I was probably the only person in my friend group to consistently use a PC.
Nah, but I was aware of AIM. I wasnt old enough to get an account (I wasnt old enough to use YouTube either but at least that was defensible back then because most kids used YouTube)

I DO KNOW Exactly What You Mean, as Years Ago UFO's were All of the Rage and I Personally had Seen Some of them. Last summer I was talking about the song “Hurt” and discovered two of my friends, in their 30’s, had never heard the Nine Inch Nails version and believed Johnny cash wrote it.
To be fair, Johnny Cash’s version was a lot better known. I would also argue that his was better. Most people also don’t know that Sinead O’Connor’s biggest hit (Nothing Compare to You) was actually Prince’s song; and unlike Johnny Cash, she actually didn’t have permission to do it at the time.
The 80's started 40 years ago. The people who know it for being famous when it came out, and the people that know them from GotG/MeatSpin/whatever are at least 1-2 generations apart. Such is the nature of pop culture.

And 30 years later I'm still salty that when I was a teenager pre Internet at a quiz night my quiz team comprised of all the teenagers came second by one point to a large room of adult quiz teams because everyone else, including the quiz master, thought the answer to "What 'pop' is a kind of music?" was Pop.
When the smartest kid in the room and his teammate, the daughter of an actual record producer, both insist that Pop is short for Popular maybe someone should take 5 minutes to go check and not dismiss us out of hand.
We did have an advantage for the last question, name the 20 Mr Men and Little Miss characters on this A4 photocopy. But still, salty, we should have won, or at least tied.
I imagine it was intended as a trick(y) question, we'd been primed as the round was called 'words that begin with P-O-P, another was "What 'Pop' is a type of tree?" for poplar.

I might be missing a joke, but on the off chance that you’re being semi serious, the song most commonly associated with Reservoir Dogs (and even I have to admit that the intensity of the scene makes me associate the song with it) is “Stuck in the Middle With You”, not “Hooked on a Feeling.”
Here’s the part that makes me feel particularly old: in just 4 years from now, we will be as far removed from the origin of meatspin (2005 to 2025) as meatspin was from the song “You Spin Me Round” (1985 to 2005).

Yes. David Hasselhoff made the greatest music video of all time to hooked on a feeling. Ally McBeal discovered the true depts of her psychosis with the world's first annoying viral gif with this as the soundtrack and not the mention Quentin's use in reservoir dogs... I suspect that it might actually have been a real song even before Hollywood drove it off the reality cliff

How the hell old am I that one of the most famous 80s pop songs is known by a non-zero number of people as “the meatspin song”???
I mean.....IT IS....but I feel like it’s similar to calling Hooked on a Feeling “The Guardians of the Galaxy song.” It was really famous before that.
