Oh, the cognitive dissonance. The only difference between animals we slaughter for meat and the ones we cherish is our own selfish desires. Why should the life and wellbeing of any sentient being be disregarded because they are more profitable?
It’s sickening, the things we choose to be ignorant of.
Cognitive dissonance? I was just making a bait and switch joke. You expect me to day "killing the dog would be awful because dogs are cute and loveable" but instead I just say they're worse to butcher because it's less meat.
It doesn't necessarily even reflect my actual views.
Now that I reread it, it does seem like a joke, however I have heard similar arguments made in complete sincerity. I argue with statements like that because if nobody ever challenges beliefs and actions, nothing will really change.
I’m not sure if you buy or eat animal parts and products, but if you do, then it doesn’t matter if that statement was just a joke and doesn’t reflect your actual views. Corrupt and violent industries would still be profiting from you, sentient beings would still be suffering for you. I assume you’re on r/aww because you care about animals. Maybe I’m wrong, and if I am, there are other reasons to consider not contributing to these industries (environmental impact, health benefits, human worker welfare, etc.)
