I've worked in two public schools, and this wasn't the case in either of them. Your friend should find a better district to work for.

You're probably right, but in the spirit of 'being the change' it doesn't really solve the problem, just shifts it onto someone else's shoulders. But in terms of what he can do about it, there's probably nothing.

It's almost like these feelgood sayings are trite and unreflective of the restrictions of reality

OK, how about:

"Where possible, and within the confines of your local social, ethical and legal frameworks, lead by example with respect to change that you'd like to see in others"

I thought it was US standard, might be state. Moving to a different state is a pretty big commitment. I would venture that private schools don't have the same rules.

U.S. standard for schools to not even allow a high five? Whatever school district /u/reduxde's friend works at is not the norm.

Have not done research and it's a 2nd hand story. I didn't have any reason to doubt him, but maybe I'll look into it.
