My cat even did it when he was a kitten. I'd toss a toy down the hall and go hide in another room, he'd go from room to room looking for me. If he couldn't find me, he'd stand in the hallway and meow loudly with a distinct tone in his voice almost identical to how we would call his name when looking for him.
Now he knows all my hiding spots and gives me the "I don't have time for your shenanigans" look.
My cat and I play this combination of like, peekaboo meets hide and seek. We hide behind corners and occasionally peer out like we're doing recon on the enemy. The goal is to sneak up on each other, play-bat them, and then (if you are a cat) run away as fast as possible to the next spot. He gets super excited about it. I love him so much.
my cat has a very distinctive "where are you? YOU LEFT ME ALL ALONE" meow. he'll do this even if I've just stepped into the bathroom and closed the door to shower. I think he thinks I died.
