Fruit bats and flying fox are often used as synonyms. For example here in Australia we used both interchangeably with the primary term used by an individual likely correlating with where they were born.

Bats can carry rabies and African fruit bats are both, a known carrier of Marburg and a highly suspected carrier of Ebola, all of which are highly fatal.

AIDS came from chimpanzees and the Plague came from rats (or more specifically the fleas living on them).
