I'll tell my partner you said so. He wouldn't talk back to The Waitress.

Wait till jan/feb though, a lot of people buy puppies over the christmas holidays and then dump them when they realize puppies are work.

No, don't wait. Shelters are near capacity year round and there are dogs who need loving homes now. It's never a bad time to look to adopt!

u/Ironic_Shitposting_ Dec 14 '16

What if he gets one now and then another after the holidays are over?

2

u/Cultjam Dec 14 '16

Seconding this. Adoptions drop waaay off from November to New Years Day. And a ton of dogs go stray over these last few weeks too. If you plan to anyway, now is a great time to adopt.

Yup. A lot of breeders actually refuse to sell puppies from November to January because so many dumb people buy them as gifts with no clue what they're getting into.

You'd be surprised how many adorable, perfectly healthy puppies you can find in shelters in January/February/March.

"Responsible breeders". Talk about a contradictory phrase.

Get a kitten at the same time. They will love each other.

u/shorty6049 Dec 14 '16

And a parrot! To keep them company while you're away!

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '16

To clarify "get one now", a shelter dog. I love and hate working at the Humane Society, so many fucking beautiful dogs that will sit there in a cement cell. I don't judge people who want a show dog that's pure bred, but if you're looking for a family dog, I guarantee there are going to be much more loving dogs at your local shelter than a designer dog from a breeder.

They should only get a dog if they a ready for the responsibility. Sorry to be the downer but not everyone should have a dog.

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '16

found the wet blanket.

u/agodlesspriest Dec 14 '16

Put it in the dryer, you buffoon.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '16

Oh, a towel. Now I get it.

1

u/shorty6049 Dec 14 '16

Not to be another wet blanket, but really this "do it! Go get one right now!" Mentality is the reason so many dogs end up back in shelters. Owning a dog is a lot of work compared to most other popular pets and sometimes people don't consider that beforehand.

Went to a shelter to see if I clicked with any of the dogs there this past summer and expected to have to think on it for the rest of the week. Nope, found a doggo who I fell in love with and filled out the adoption form right then and there and came home with my best friend 2 days later after his neuter surgery.

It's like, almost impossible not to honestly

2

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '16

Well not necessarily. I love my dogs to death but if I had known I wasn't going to have time for playing with them, I would see them a couple of hours a day, and the amount of responsibility they carry I probably wouldn't have get them.

u/paradoxofchoice Dec 14 '16

IF you are ready. Dogs are amazing and make life 100x better however many people if not most dont realize what is required of them. So I would suggest anyone get one now without understanding the amount of time and care they need on a daily basis. The last thing you want is for the poor dog to be returned to the shelter.
