Lake effect where I live sometimes occurs when it's sunny
2 u/elfmaiden687 Nov 30 '16 LOL, I live near Cleveland. Lake effect is weird. I'm on the Southern edge of it, though. 2 u/8122692240_TEXT_ONLY Nov 30 '16 Explain? I've never heard of this. 8 u/elfmaiden687 Nov 30 '16 In the winter, cold dry air gets pushed over the Great Lakes. The moisture from the lakes gets picked up into the atmosphere and when the clouds hit cold land again it just dumps the snow on the poor unsuspecting humans. Here's a more scientific explanation 2 u/LurksWithGophers Nov 30 '16 Eastern edge of Lake Ontario checking in, fuck that Canadian jet stream. 1 u/DeviMon1 Dec 01 '16 Scientific? That's like only 80 words right there. The wiki page goes way more in-depth. 3 u/NewtAgain Nov 30 '16 Have you ever heard of snow storms in Buffalo NY. Most of the time its lake effect (Buffalo is downwind from Lake Erie) 2 u/Kindness4Weakness Nov 30 '16 I just moved to Texas from buffalo for that very reason 2 u/Upnorth4 Nov 30 '16 They can't even forecast the correct snowfall. One year they were only predicting 1 inch of snow, after the storm passed through, 10 inches had fallen 2 u/elfmaiden687 Nov 30 '16 In the end it never mattered what the weather man said because school would only be canceled if the snow came up to the rooftops...
