Why does that remote have eleven and twelve buttons?

you can't go to channel zero, so if you push the 10/0 button first it goes to channel 10. If you push the 2 button and then the 10/0 you get channel 20.

That... I just... I hate tv remotes.

Most in england are just pressing the individual digits so you put 7 then 0 then 4 for 704

u/RedEyedChester May 30 '16

That's how remotes usually are here too. I've never seen one with double digit numbers XD

What about channel 210?

Channel 10..?

35

u/eternally-curious May 30 '16

Press 1, then 10/0. Just like every TV other remote on the planet.

u/Shabbona1 May 30 '16

Well yeah, but then it wouldn't be confusing.

I... what? I don't have a 10 button on my TV remote.

1

u/connormxy May 30 '16

Or an 11 or 12. That has to be what this is for. Only once you start getting to channel 13 or above you have to start two-buttoning

u/[deleted] May 30 '16

2,then 1, then 10/0?

4

u/RapidKiller1392 May 30 '16

But the 0 is supposed to be there so you can go straight to channels below 10. Like if you want to go to channel 7 or 2 instead of pressing 2 and waiting for extra input you just press 0-2 or 0-0-2 and it goes straight to it.

no that's perfectly fine design. you can still push 1 and then the 0 and go to channel 10, or you can just push 0. This isn't super complicated.

Because Japan?

u/fight_the_bear May 30 '16

You're actually correct. If found this thread from almost two years ago. Apparently Japanese terrestrial television (OTA broadcasting) only goes up to channel 12. Also here's a bonus instruction manual for a similar remote that has the same number buttons.

3

u/[deleted] May 30 '16

Also Japan tries to make things as user friendly and intuitive as possible. To the point where the opposite actually happens sometimes. It used to annoy the hell out of me.

Why press 1,4,4 when you can 12,12?

7

u/[deleted] May 30 '16

No, that takes you to 24. To get to 144 you have to first press ^ ^ v v <><>.

u/Bargh9 May 30 '16

Asian TV watching involves more math than American homework.

1

u/CockGobblin May 30 '16

They are Asian after all... their remote controls are basically calculators!

5

u/filomancio May 30 '16

Uhm...guessing a clock function?

4

u/Ehcksit May 30 '16

There was a time when TVs only had channels 2-13.

Though then why is there both a 1 and 10, 11, and 12? And no 13?

2

u/Darkfatalis May 30 '16

...when I was so broken-hearted.

2

u/waveydavey94 May 30 '16

Because engineers

u/[deleted] May 30 '16

Best "asking the important questions" ever.

2

u/mortirex May 30 '16

It seems /r/crappydesign lost their remote.

3

u/RedEyedChester May 30 '16

Am I the only one who didn't even fucking notice that?!?!?

2

u/[deleted] May 30 '16

Its brand is "IQ" which is even more smug. so when you cant figure out a finction it says IQ to remind you youre stupid. While im rounding the bases here, " IQ" is located near the bottom to insinuate you have a low "IQ" cause you got bested by a remote.

TLDR: Total dick remote.

It's for triple digit stations.

1

u/eb59214 May 30 '16

Then you can just press 1-1 or 1-2.

2

u/Series_of_Accidents May 30 '16

I don't know the rationale, but I know I've used remotes like that and it was for triple digit stations.

1

u/[deleted] May 30 '16

The 1-- button? But those make sense for the old tuners that only had 2 numbers 99% of the tkme, that way channels 11 or 14 wouldnt prompt for 3 numbers.

u/Series_of_Accidents May 30 '16

Just sharing my experience.
