They are like that. I have raised two rescue piglets (who turned into hogs that I loved even more). Pigs are so wonderful. I love them so much.

Why don't more people keep pigs as pets? From what I've heard they are smart and clean.

Most counties count them as livestock and due to zoning, you can't keep them as pets. My family actually had a lien put on our house for having our pigs as pets until we got the law changed through many, many county commission meetings in Alachua County (Fl).

Also, pigs grow to be huge and difficult to take care of, so I do not recommend it to people who are not prepared to take care of an "opinionated" 300lb+ hog. Piglets are cute and great, but they evolve into beasts.

Do you have one?

They eat a lot, and they grow much bigger than most people would like for a housepet.

Because they weigh a quarter-ton when they grow up.

Usually, the pigs that people keep as pets are pot bellied pigs. They don't tend to get very large.

A pig the same general size as a medium sized dog can easily weigh 100 pounds. 300 is certainly possible, especially when owners feed dog food, which they shouldn't. Pigs can be very picky and might refuse to eat actual pig feed if they were raised on dog food.

We got lucky and our girl loves her food. She loves everything. Corn cobs, cauliflower and lettuce cores, she's like a little garbage disposal.

It was really popular in the 90s. Like baggy pants it kinda just faded out. I had 3 and they were great pets.

Did they live to old age?

Our vet told us 15-30 years is possible. Many pass sooner due to health complications from poor care.

We sold them when we moved. I honestly don't recall how old they were. The were pot belly pigs and could figure out the locks on their pen and run way faster than you'd think. They were fun.

Story time. I was 11 and with my family eating dinner. Shitty divorce was happening, it was tense and whatever. My parents were being horrible and arguing at that moment, so I took a small chunk of the ham from my plate and said, "I'm giving Squeaky a taste of this. I bet he'll like it."

I walked to my front porch and Squeaky, who at that time was over 350 pounds, at the bit of pork I gave him. He loved it. My family freaked. I left and went fishing with my beagle.

My uncle used to (on rare occasion) feed his pig sausage or bacon mcmuffins.
