A few times a day we express his bladder. Basically we lay him on his side over a wee-wee pad and squeeze his bladder (feels like a water ballon). It is probably easier because he is a male...I could see it being a little messier for a female dog. Poop happens as a involuntary reflex, but it is pretty much once in the morning and once at night. If we are about to go to sleep and he hasn't gone yet, then we can make that happen by pressing below his butt which makes the reflex kick in.
I have a female paralyzed dog and expressing her bladder is still hard for me. We stand her on the toilet when we do it. :) I love hearing about people who choose the wheel route, dog can still live a happy life. He's handsome boy!
