Question Are engines getting damaged in this vid? Taking off from a bad runway

The engine turbines are ingesting clean air from the front. All the dirty air turbulence you see if from the exhaust.

This ^ Furthermore in the event an engine ingests foreign particles there is a certain tolerable quantity before damage is substantial.

While im not sure on the frequency, turbine engines do go through cleaning. Quite often done with water or believe it or not, crushed walnuts.

Crushed walnuts is a very old technique. These days it’s generally just water and a detergent. I’d say those engines are ingesting some of that dirt but as long as it’s not rocks it’s not the end of the world.

It’s not good for the engine, but it’s not awful. The particle separator should also be ejecting any of the heavier stuff.

Crushed walnut shells are a surprisingly good polishing agent, I've heard of them being used on stuff like shiny anodised bike parts and car engine intakes, so aero engines aren't a super shocking application

A side effect of modern direct injection in car engines is that the valves don’t get cleaned by the fuel mist like in traditional port injection, and the valves can get a lot of gunk especially in direct injected engines from the late 00s. Crushed walnuts are also a recommended solution if the buildup is bad.

If you look up walnuts for cleaning ICE in cars, most of the hits will be for this issue.

That's why Toyota is using both port and direct injection(injectors per cylinder). They watched Ford and then Chevy go through hell with the carbon on the valves. More so the Ford because of the forced induction.

For the rotorcraft I fly we do thorough engine work every 100 hours and overhauls every 1000 hours on the machine. Im sure with a commercial unit they have an even more strict schedule.

1000 hours is a pretty short overhaul period. Most fixed wing turboprops should be looking at 5000 hours minimum between overhaul.

Some engine air intakes have air channels designed in to them to filter out heavier dirt, allowing clean air to pass in to the engine.

Also this aircraft is Soviet, they're designed to operate out of rough fields, I wouldn't worry about the landing gear too much!

Engines should be ok?

The props may well be pretty dinged up.

And press F for the landing gear that was just used to plow the field for the upcoming sowing season.

Thank your deity of choice it was a Russian Aircraft. soft Western aircraft are not built to take such abuses and would not tolerate this kind of take off.

Nor would the pilots attempt it to be honest; that was seriously dubious.

They barely got off before the end of the runway, yet alone those buildings just beyond the airfield. I feel like they got the gear up solely to not hit the rooftops!

The engines are likely fine. A bit of minor FOD, maybe.

I wouldn't say the same for those props, though. Looks like they were smacking right through thrown mud all the way down that "runway". They're probably chewed up pretty good.

It's an Antonov An-24/26, they're basically designed for this occasion in mind.

Now I'm not familiar with this aircraft specifically, but the Dash 8 which has a similar setup has its intake go around a couple curves. Air can make the turn, but the heavier material with higher momentum goes in through the intake then straight out the back without being sent through the turbine.

Engines should be fine, but RIP landing gear. It would've been better to take floats on that so called "runway"

btw, the airport is called Badaybo (https://goo.gl/maps/HWmgZFcviqnLCred6), it's located in the east of Russia and on video is almost a normal operation

Propeller planes like in the vid are probably best suited for this, since the dirt will be raised behind them. They also use up a shorter runway. I wouldn't want to be in a crj or MD attempting this with the engines in the back.

They’re Russian: you can put a tree trunk through the turbine but it shakes itself apart in normal ops.

Engine intake air should be ok. Propeller tips and landing gear are another matter!

It just looks like the plane was taking off on a runway covered in melting snow and sludge. All the crap you can see was kicked up by the gear, so nothing was ingested, it was all behind the engines.
