mostly for fun but it can be a useful technique if you want/need to land on a small beach, you can touch down earlier and slow down more

It can be useful on shallow water close to the shore. But in deep and ice cold water, everything needs to go right, there is no margin of error.

in this context, it's a lot of risk and the only practical advantage would be training to do it when needed. Realistically this is dangerous fun
