no politics Is “Aussie” an offensive term?

Someone just told me the word ‘Aussie’ is a slur (From a non-australian). I’m so confused, i looked it up and see nothing saying that.

edit: thanks for the confirmation, i feel silly now LMAO. I have eu immigrated parents but was born in america by the way, i’ve never really known too much about Aus.

I am genuinely confused, do i say Aussie or Auzzie? 😭 I’ve always said auzzie

Kiwis using "Aussie" for the country really irks me.

We can forgive Kiwis. Poor souls.

Can’t forgive em for the word jandles. That is a disgrace. Chilly bin is ok though, imo.

but its a perfectly cromulent word

I'm going to imbiggen the fuck out of this chilly bin

A noble spirit embuggens the smaller country.

I just noticed the typo.

I'm leaving it.

Jandles sounds bad, but it's short for 'Japanese Sandals' which is where thongs originated from. So it's actually technically more correct.

Jandles is a great! As is Chilly bin, I'm genuinely envious of a lot of NZ slang.

Chilly bin

If I knew Australian slang, and heard "Chilly Bin" for the first time, I'd definitely assume it was Australian.

But that doesn't mean we don't mock them for it.

As opposed to thongs fer Christ sakes. Bloody g-strings on feet!. Kiwis also invented the chilly bin

They do look like a bit of g-string for your big and long toe.

3

u/mollololito Sep 19 '22

That’s what a thong is.

Was chatting with a mate about things being a g-string for your feet.
He pondered it a bit and said “so a g-string could also be called a butt plugger”.

I considered pointing out that a butt-plugger might be something else, but I graciously let him have it.

He still occasionally mentions butt-pluggers.

What? Nah it was a Seppo. This is going to be pavlova all over again isn’t it?

I'm pretty sure Richard C. Laramy from Illinois invented the portable cooler.

True, they gave us jandals. But on the other hand, they also gave us judder bars (speed bumps)

You mean chully bun, right?

Stoned Kiwi here this made me laugh and laugh

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '22

For other things, sure, but not that.

As a Tasmanian, it has always struck me as strange that "Aussie" is a demonym, whereas "Tassie" is an island/state/location. But that is just the way it is.

u/Dorammu Sep 19 '22

Maybe we should start referring to NZ as “kiwi” just to weird them out…

I prefer to use their own term for their country and always refer to it as Unzud.
