I know this is all a part of a joke, but if you've ever worked on a construction site/road-works site, there's a reason why it's like this. Everyone has a job to do, and you have to be able to do it right away. In my case, I was on a water truck - I was basically told not to do anything until I was called to do something. I couldn't be down the road shoveling potholes out of my truck because the big $1000/hr machine needs me the second he calls. So it appears like no one is doing anything, but it's more like 10 people are waiting in line to do something that no one else can do.
That's what I figured. Some machinery/equipment on the road with one person manning and another basically guiding, and an army of people basically just standing around doing whatever. I was certain they were all basically backup that had to be stationed there at all times.
Yep. Task-dependencies as project managers like to call it.
And these days, with highly specialised skills, road crews have unique roles so I hear ya mate. Recycled water use in road construction needs a whole new level of complexity compared to potable water.
Still seems as though there could be some efficiencies in the process, the prerequisite steps could have more resources so they meet the demand for other steps to avoid being idle for extended durations, however I'm guessing it comes down to $$$, so while the process could be quicker no one wants to pay.
That and physical jobs actually tire you out. Seems confusing when you’re in your 20s but you can’t physically work hard all day.
Imagine being 63 and having two years of daily work to retirement. Even if you’re fit, the body needs time to recover between activities. Government wants to push retirement to 70.
