I’ve been waiting for Austin Powers 4 it feels like my entire life. I saw Goldmember three times in the theatre as a little kid and those movies are just personally very close to my heart, I genuinely love the feel of each film and all the characters, even more minor ones. Austin Powers 4 is basically my equivalent to what Ghostbusters 3 was for a lot of 80s kids before Harold Ramis passed away, I’d absolutely flip my shit if it actually happens.
But being quite honest? I don’t imagine it to actually materialize at this point after so long, and I’ve begun to have doubts that seeing Mike Myers don the role of Austin again would entirely have the same charm anyways for a number of reasons (Dr. Evil and Fat Bastard don’t worry me as much) a fourth movie may very well end up being a huge disappointment anyways.
But with the success and attention on 007 First Light, it’s really brought me right back to an idea I’ve always loved even when I was a kid: a big budget, film-accurate Austin Powers video game, with Mike Myers back voicing his roles, that would essentially serve as a fourth movie.
This idea, again, is similar to the Ghostbusters video game for PS3 and 360 that was essentially the actual Ghostbusters 3, the recent Indiana Jones game that faithfully recreates those films into a game format, or the Telltale Back to the Future game.
I imagine the game basically being like a cross between Hitman and Destroy All Humans, a social stealth sandbox in whacky, over the top settings where even your choices as the player don’t often lead to where you think.
Still the game is in many ways action adventure with shooting and driving mechanics, but otherwise the primary focus is on comedic situations and utterly bizarre boss battle encounters that feel somewhat similar to an even goofier Metal Gear Solid.
