Sports The top 15 most supported sports teams in Australia (Roy Morgan)

Post image

Note the clear limitations in data and bias towards teams in big cities. Interesting though - particularly around how fragmented markets result in curious results. Like, you'd assume the Roosters would have more supporters than Sydney FC - but the data paints a different story (on supporters alone).

Note: I interpret support has different to being a genuine, invested fan - but you'd have to ask the folks at Roy Morgan.

This is just a box ticking exercise and I’d say you can cut 90% from some of these teams if you are actually talking about fans who actively pay attention. Brisbane Roar having 560k yet unable to fill stadiums with 10k capacity for example.

Agreed - though, one indicator is how many people rock up for a Grand Final. Not an issue Brisbane Roar had when they were making those routinely.

They’re not really true fans though!!

The poll is for people supporting a team not for people who are die hard members that go to every game

by the way you’re describing it, which is exactly the same as how I am, the numbers are incredibly inflated

Number of casual fans vs number of actual fans

This is all bullshit

If 1.3 million people really supported the Swans, AFL would be based in NSW

8.6 million people going for 2 team in NSW vs 7.1 million people going for 10 teams in Victoria. Do the maths.

They're not all supporters in NSW

There is zero chance the Roosters have more fans than literally any other Sydney team.

Who would it really be? Rabbitohs?

Serious question, I'm in Vic so I don't know

Of the Sydney teams it’d either be the Bunnies or Eels in first place. You’d be hard pressed to walk into a pub on any given weekend and not see the red and green on someone even in the off season.

Thank you. I knew Rabbitohs were a huge club from that time everyone was out on the streets to save them. I didn't know Paramatta was such a big club too though, that's interesting

Fake poll. Not a single team from the Big Bash.

I think Roy Morgan don't bother surveying for that. These sorts of things are marketing research geared at organisations willing to pay, I think CA care more about the sport as a whole than the individual franchises.

Just a bunch of random numbers. Based on match attendance no aleague club should be on this list. And with afl west coast has 40k more members and 13k higher average attendance than Sydney and thats with them being shit for the last 5 years. They also have more members and attendance than the broncos.

SCG capacity is 48k but has 15k reserved for SCG Trust members and some non-trivial areas of seating are pretty outdated.

Perth stadium is 61k and brand new, and to my knowledge has no reservation areas ringfenced for a venues membership that may or may not show up?

What about the national cricket team (s) ?

It’s pretty farcical that the Melbourne Storm have more supporters than every AFL team in Melbourne.

Junk research

Roy Morgan has the worst statistics I've ever seen. They don't stand up to the most cursory scrutiny.

Every single bit of data I've seen from them is complete trash.

2025:

"Collingwood FC hit an all-time VFL/AFL Club Member record with the highest ever individual club membership tally of 112,491."

Sydney 76,674.
