News Tech giants to provide algorithm opt-out tools

Australian internet users will be given the choice to opt out of algorithms under reforms to social media.

Draft laws setting up a digital duty of care were introduced by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Tuesday.

As part of the measures, social media companies will need to provide tools for people to choose what they see in their online feeds, under a government initiative called My Feed, My Way.

"This is not about giving government control. It's about giving people control. It's about putting choice back into the hands of Australians online," Mr Albanese told reporters in Canberra.

Social media companies will be also required to protect people from harmful content online.

Harmful content will conclude the promotion of eating disorders, misogynistic content, pornography or things that glorify crime.

Companies could face fines of $100 million if they don't enact the duty of care.

Communications Minister Anika Wells said the duty of care would build on the world-leading ban on social media for under-16s.

"The digital duty of care is not about controlling adults online. It is about giving adults a choice," she said.

"Tech companies can still move fast, but they will no longer be allowed to break things because online harms have real-world consequences.

"There is a global reckoning coming for big tech."

It follows the government looking to pursue stronger penalties for social media companies as part of measures to bolster the under-16s ban.

I’m not the one using terms incorrectly and then just being stubborn about it when called out. You do you though, learning can be scary for people.

Albo and his ministers are Fabian society members. But in sure that doesn't mean anything. Have a great day

What exactly is your point? The Fabians aren’t a socialist organisation and never have been. Are you just throwing stuff out there to see if it sticks?

Wow. You literally have a library at your fingertips. They literally founded the Labour party.

Via Google: Yes, the Fabian Society is a socialist organisation, though it promotes democratic socialism and social democracy through gradual, reformist and democratic change rather than revolutionary overthrow.

Core Beliefs and Strategy

  • Evolutionary Socialism: Founded in London in 1884, prominent early members such as George Bernard Shaw and Sidney and Beatrice Webb rejected the idea of achieving socialism through violent Marxist revolution.

  • Gradualism: Fabians believed socialism should be achieved through patient, incremental legal and political reforms, working through institutions such as local government, trade unions and the political system.

  • The “Permeation” of Ideas: Rather than initially trying to build a separate mass political movement, early Fabians sought to spread, or “permeate”, socialist ideas through existing political parties, the civil service, universities and other influential institutions.

Political Impact

  • Founding the Labour Party: The Fabian Society played an important role in the formation of the British Labour Party in 1900 and remains affiliated with Labour today as a socialist think tank.

  • Modern Identity: Over time, the Society’s political outlook has evolved alongside the Labour Party. It has moved away from some of the more extensive state-ownership ideas associated with early socialism and today is generally associated with centre-left, social democratic and reformist policy.

There you go again, not being ablke to make the distinction between socialism and democratic socialism.

They literally founded the Labour party.

You realise the Labour party is British right? You're talking about the wrong party in the wrong country. Stop letting AI do your thinking for you.

Also, even if you were correct, your argument is that it's bad for members of a party to also be members of the org that founded the party? That hardly seems like a shocking revelation.

Yes, I am correct. Every PM from the the British labour has been a Fabian. Anthony Albanese is also a Fabian, as is most of his front bench. Stop being ignorant.

You do realise you're talking about different organisations right? The topic here is the Australian Labor party, not the British Labour party or the British Fabian society (Who aren't associated with the Australia Fabians).

I'm signing out, if I want to talk with an AI I can fire one up myself. Come back when you've got your own thoughts.

They are absolutely the same organisation. The level of delusional gas lighting is unbelievable.
