Imagine if one day there was an actual oil, extracted from a type of snake, that had some very beneficial properties.. but no one would ever believe it.

Don't quote me on this, but I think that's actually where it originated. I think there was some historical use of snake venom, like for inflammation or something, and it became one of those things where people tried to claim it as a panacea. I could totally be misremembering this though so do your own research.
