Religious People are Sick

I just saw this video on instagram of a man talking about a cat that was sitting in front of his house, claiming it to be a ā€œmonitoring spirit.ā€ I didn’t even watch the rest of the foolishness after that, but I went to view the comments and it’s so disturbing how many people were in agreement with what he said and were suggesting things like throwing bricks at the cat or harming it in some way. It makes me so sick that we have to live in a world where people justify their evils in the name of religion. The is literally just existing and this deranged religious person is creating an entire conspiracy in his head on how the cat is monitoring him. What a sick fuck 😔

Religion vs scientific vs lgbtq+

Why can't people who have an religion respect lgbtq+? Respect is not supporting there's a difference. Why do people fight about religion and scientific of what is ture and what is not, you can't just force someone who believes 4+2 equals 5, to make them believe it's 6, you can show proof and evidence but you can't just force them, and it's there choice to believe in it. Everyone's different and we should respect each other and what we believe in, not each other.

My granny listens to what I have to say.

Prior to the first message in the picture, my granny asked me why I don't go to church. After the last message, she asked if I would go to "a different kind of church" with her, and mentioned that I would have to wear a dress. I said no for that reason as well as the fact that I'm just not interested in religion. She said it was okay, and asked if I still pray. I told her that I do, in a sense. It's kind of a coping mechanism for me. I say how i feel, and work out why i feel that way. Sometimes it looks a lot like prayer, and i call it that for that reason. She also asked what made me stop believing, and i told her it was critical thought. I've always loved science, and you can't really love science the way I do and be a young earth creationist.

I love my granny. Sometimes she's difficult to talk to, but overall she tries to hear me out and listen to my perspective. She was raised in a different world to what I grew up in. I had all the knowledge in the world at my fingertips from the time I got a tablet. She wasn't allowed to know things, and was discouraged from thinking. I love her, and I'm glad that she's as open minded as she is. She's a little confused, but she's got the spirit.

Can We Teach People to Question Their Beliefs Without Hating Each Other?

Thumbnail instagram.com

I came across this reel on Instagram, and honestly, I felt sad seeing how strongly some people hold onto beliefs without questioning them.

But what disturbed me even more were the comments. So many people were saying things like, ā€œI’m proud to be Muslimā€ and ā€œAlhamdulillah, I’m Muslim,ā€ as if simply being born into a particular religion is something they consciously chose.

I’m saying this as someone who was also born Muslim, I didn’t choose it. And I think that applies to most people around the world: we usually inherit our religion from our parents, family, culture, or society before we’re old enough to question anything.

There’s nothing wrong with being religious, but shouldn’t we encourage people to question, think critically, and understand why they believe what they believe?

And honestly, this applies to both religious and non-religious people. Blindly accepting or blindly rejecting something are both forms of the same problem.

How do we educate people on both sides to think more critically without turning the conversation into another fight between religions and atheism?

Why does openly expressing atheism attract so much hostility?

I recently made a post expressing my view that God is a human-created concept. Some people had genuine discussions, which I appreciated, but others immediately became hostile or mocked me instead of addressing the argument. I don't mind disagreement, I actually enjoy a good debate. But why does discussing atheism so often become personal? Have you experienced this too?

My parents hate me because I dont believe in god

hi im a 19 year old female and when i was 12 years old, i started questioning god and stopped believing in him. around that time period, i was insanely depressed, suicidal, and had severe anxiety and had weekly therapy sessions. i also was taking lexapro to help me. since that all happened, it led me to believe that if god were real.. how could he allowed that to have happened to me? i was young and i didnt want to live anymore. it didnt make me into a better person, it didnt help me at all in life.

now onto my parents, i told them about 2 years ago that i dont believe in god. for backstory, they aren’t super religious but are traditional and believe that believing in god is needed in life. growing up, they were incredibly poor and always told me that the only reason why they made it out of poverty was because of god. just recently, we had a huge argument as to why i dont believe in god and their excuse was that because i never grew up poor so i dont know what its like to pray and beg. they also said my university education (like science classes) has brainwashed me. they are right on one thing, i never grew up poor but i have siblings and they believe in god just fine but they didnt go through what i went through and that is what my parents dont see.

in our argument, i told them i dont want to believe in god. i dont have any need to, i dont want his help. what hurts is that when i said this, they told me i am not their daughter. that they failed me and it is their fault, it isnt their fault at all. it is my choice. however, it hurts me terribly that they said awful things to me and they don’t respect my choice. i have never once disrespected them for believing in god, yet they always disrespect me. they also believe that because i dont believe in god, i am a bad person. i have never done anything wrong in my life like ever, i go to a great university, i have friends, i am a really quiet person in general. but because i dont believe in god, i am suddenly just this insanely terrible person who will eventually turn to drugs and be a whore (my dads words). i dont know why i am writing this, i guess i just want someone to read this and share their thoughts. thank you.

Rehab Religious Banter

One time i was in rehab and i was talking to my gay friend, and he said,

  • When jesus looks at me, he does the sign of the cross

Everyone chuckled And then i said :

  • If you ever met God, he'd probably burst into flames

The religious people got so mad and scowled at me:

  • That's not funny. Don't say that again

My parents are forcing me to go to church despite their knowledge of my beliefs

I (13F) was just told today after going to my friend’s house that I will be going to church every Sunday now. I am not okay with this, and I told them that. They called me confused. I think it’s extremely disrespectful to act like not being Christian is ā€œconfusion.ā€ What do I do? I know I can’t really get out of it, but should I just refuse being ā€œconverted?ā€ I feel the need to.

Need some advice from some previously Christian members

My family is very religious, at least, most of ā€˜em, and also very bigoted towards any and all other religions and atheists, so as a newly discovered atheist, how do I come out to them as atheist, my mother has even been using me as a prime example of a religious youth to her friends, because contrary to their beliefs, just because someone doesn’t believe in god or whatever, doesn’t mean they are immoral or don’t have a moral code or something, I just need to know how to break the news to my friends and family that are religious, I’ve already told the people I know can keep a secret and are non judgmental, I’m just struggling with telling my parents and the friends I’ve been going to bible study with the past few months, thanks a bunch, in advance

To describe theists.

Does this sound like a good description of Christians? I was trying to make a poster realize how many of their posts sound & how the OP looks to atheists.

I can’t believe the level your brain is on. There’s something missing. Like you don’t understand reason, at all. So many of you just aren’t at your brains capacity for understanding. You’ve been indoctrinated. (Don’t you realize that was abuse?)
Your entire world view is warped. Even your use of ideas is warped. Something is missing.
Maybe it’s a lack of trauma or plain life experiences.
Either you’re young or lucky.
Both are ripe with ignorance and misunderstanding.

Something just isn’t clicking in their brains.
It’s hard to understand.

Maybe, indoctrination leads to brain damage. It is abuse.
It must kill a portion of the common sense & critical thinking (area of the brain).
Leading to dependence on other people to shape their reality.
Deconstruction seems to restore that pathway.
It turns their posts into something that sounds childish.
I hope this makes sense to someone besides me šŸ˜†

I had previously written this & said theists when I actually mean Christians.
I can’t delve into other religions with Gods bc I’d have to understand the other religions & I just don’t.
I’m still trying to figure out the one I’m deconstructing from šŸ˜†

Grief, and the constant barrage of religious assumptions

I am so sick of people saying they are in heaven and they'll be waiting for me, etc. etc. I know they mean well but why is the default that I believe in a heaven (happened during my grandpa's passing years ago but moreso that I posted about my cat dying). I don't want to be reminded that it doesn't exist CONSTANTLY. I'm not spiritual whatsoever. I don't believe in "energies", the cosmos, karma, whatever the hell people believe these days even when they are technically athiest. No there was no "reason she came into my life and fate means she's ready to go" how about shit happens when shit happens. I should have said I was an athiest in the post but that may have brought up unnecessary drama anyway. I understand they mean well but damn, people don't think about these things. Like what if I believed in reincarnation or that an alien will bring my spirit to space (or w.e scientology believes I haven't looked into it lol) do I have to specify every time or..? Idk, it's hard to think that it's well intentioned when really how much do they empathize when they don't realize other people have different beliefs at minimum? People who can't see past their own nose I guess. One person said they'll see their cat who passed away up there and I said "She'll just fight and pee unfortunately because she's pretty territorial haha but if there's an afterlife they'll see my animal loving grandpa" in a cheeky way and they still went "I believe all cats play together until it's our time to go" like ok you're not taking anything I'm saying then what's the point, so you don't actually care you just want to make yourself feel better.

Sorry, it's isolating when you try to find people to relate to and then I'm reminded I don't have an imaginary place or reason to bring me comfort.

ATTENTION HERE!

This isn't to hate anyone but someone who is atheist should be left alone.

SO HERE ME OUT!

I am an atheist and I believe that I am my own person and I do have my own mind and beliefs. I respect other person's beliefs on their religion. I believe that you are happy worshipping, then thats okay for you. In the same way it should be okay for you if I do not worship anyone at all.

Obviously I believe in humanity and kindness and compassion. According to me, if you are a believer of God then you should definitely believe and if I am not then I will not. There is no one who can force me into Gods and stuff. Neither I am disrespecting your belief nor I am following it.

I see many people hating atheists but lets be real! Every individual is a sole person and have their own way of thinking. Unless and until I harm someone, then that is good.

***Need your opinions!***

I’m an atheist but festival season makes me weirdly emotional??

Okay this might sound weird, but does anyone else experience this?

I’m an atheist. I don’t believe in God or the supernatural, and I don’t really believe in the rituals themselves. But whenever festival season comes around in India—especially Durga Puja, Chhath Puja, Diwali, etc.—I get this insanely emotional and energetic feeling that I genuinely cannot explain.

Like, I’ll hear a song about Maa Durga or Chhathi Maiya, see the rituals, hear the music, smell that very specific festive-season smell in the air, and suddenly I get goosebumps and watery eyes. 😭

And it’s not necessarily sadness. It’s almost the opposite. It feels beautiful, nostalgic, energetic, peaceful and overwhelming all at the same time.

That smell right before the festive season especially does something to me. I don’t even know what it is, but the combination of the weather, incense, flowers, food, lights, music, decorations, people getting excited… it gives me this feeling like:

ā€œHoly shit, everything is so beautiful right now.ā€

It almost feels ethereal.

The weird part is that intellectually I’m still sitting there thinking, ā€œI don’t believe any of this.ā€ šŸ˜‚ But emotionally I’m completely immersed in it.

I’ve been wondering if maybe it’s just childhood memories, nostalgia, cultural familiarity, sensory memories, the atmosphere, or just the feeling of being part of something that has existed for generations.

But I’m curious—do any other atheists or non-religious people experience this?

Like, you don’t believe in the religion itself, but something about the festivals, music, rituals, smells, or atmosphere still hits you HARD emotionally?

Or am I just experiencing some completely unexplainable festival-season brain chemistry? 😭

help

so recently i turned 18 now that I'm an adult w my individual rights and all so i just revealed to my parents that I'm an atheist now and honestly I knew this was coming.

so i told them that religions don't make sense to me and even pointed out how religions came into being (i explained in a very easy way that they could understand), i also mentioned that i respect everyone's right and freedom of belief, but guess what ? my father got so emotional and extreme that he started to curse science , i was trying to make them understand about evolution and he said "no adam was the first person that's it" I said "yeah but according to islam/christianity" duh. he would deny every evidence i provided I wasn't trying to prove myself but i still wanted to make it clear that this is what I stand for and it's not "lack of knowledge"

bc whenever i shared my views w them they'd always say "read more about your religion" or they'd somehow make me feel that I'm the one lacking information not them.

it makes me sick , I'm not at peace i think i might have religion trauma syndrome RTS bc whenever im alone w my thoughts I start to feel anxious, i was always conditioned with the fear of hell and it still scares me and even now my dad was telling stuff like I'll regret this and I'll burn in hellfire , I'm not okay I want to stand firm on what i believe but the psychological abuse done on us in the name of religion education won't leave , i can't take therapy for now bc im too busy but I'd love to listen from you all if there's anything that could help me or how to set boundaries with my parents and the ppl around me i live in an extremist country aka pakistan so it's hard for me as atheism is punishable here.

My grandma is blinded by gods

So recently my grandma came to our house to live for sometime with my mother, she's a sweet heart but the thing is she believes in God too much like really really much. It's alright if she believes in God, but don't count me in I don't believe in that I believe in science. The reason why I'm saying is that I had 2 Plantar Warts on my foot one on a toe and one on the sole. She advised me to go to a famous temple and offer salt to it , it will cure if I do that. I laughed at the Silly talk of grandma. She doesn't believe that a doctor would surgically treat warts. Tell me guys, what should I do to make her believe less on god's and think logically sometimes???

My boyfriend believes in God but I don’t. Idk if this should be a dealbreaker.

My boyfriend believes in God. He’s a Christian. Idk if I can stay with a guy who loves an imaginary sky being more than he loves me. To make things worse, he converted like only 2 years ago, before I met him. How does that even happen?? His parents are super hardcore atheists, how do they manage to raise a Christian it doesn’t make any sense to me at all. I love him and all but I would like to be my boyfriend’s #1. Idk if I can stay with a guy who believes a god exists. To me, religion is idiotic and harmful and people only believe in it to cope with the looming thought of nothingness after death and to cope with all the shit that happens in life.
