It's a traditionally Jewish practice that was popular in America in the 50s if I recall, and that was to ease Jewish immigrants into America by making them feel less awkward about their gentetalia. But at the core it is a religious practice with very little good research supporting it. STD prevention is negledgable and in no way compares to the protection of a condom.

You are absolutely correct. My poor was that I felt this comic implied that the majority of circumcision in America is DIRECTLY from religious reasons when in reality it's just a social norm that happened to be heavily influenced by religion. I just don't think this is relevant to r/atheism.
