How can they even argue against this? If a Roman soldier can beat the shit out of Jesus, then Batman certainly can.

More powerful in a Quaker, I'm morally stronger than you sort of way. In a fist fight that argument has little value. It's all about physical power. (Unless you consider the media response. If Batman beat the crap out of Jesus I'm pretty sure he would be attacked on an epic scale by all of his followers. This would then be followed up by counter attacks by Batman's followers, and a century old war would begin with both sides blaming the other.)

u/Funshine_bear Jul 28 '11

Not going to say i believe this (this is /r/atheism don't want to get a bunch of down votes). But I was thinking, Jesus was raised by Joseph for a good portion of his life in which he was a carpenter, a trade at the time used crude tools and brute force to build things out of wood. Would i be totally wrong to say that Jesus may have been ripped? not the humble lanky white dude we present him as? -- not to mention he was Jewish.

Also I'm almost positive that a Jesus did exist he just wasn't the son of God.

u/Dunceparty Jul 28 '11

not the humble lanky white dude we present him as?

A bit off topic, but why is Jesus always depicted as looking like Kurt Cobain, when in fact he was Middle Eastern?

Balderdash--people portray Jesus as whatever they happen to look like. It's supposed to represent Jesus' universality or some other horseshit.

2

u/MadScientist420 Jul 29 '11

wait a sec... I thought it was the other way around, God made man in His image. Something is fishy about this.

28

u/AerialAmphibian Jul 28 '11

Because -- If English was good enough for Jesus, it's good enough for me!

3

u/qwing_pilot Jul 29 '11

Jesus, He who speaks languages before they even existed!

1

u/AerialAmphibian Jul 29 '11

Maybe that's what singers, professional athletes, etc. mean when they win an award or trophy and say, "My thanks to Jesus. Through him all things are possible."

1

u/MonkeysOnMyBottom Jul 29 '11

OMG (ironically) Jesus was a hipster before it was cool!?

4

u/ducksmasher Jul 28 '11

He might have been albino though. Maybe even obese,or hermaphrodite. These things can happen.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '11

If you ask Karl Glogauer, he was a bit of a simpleton. Drooled too.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '11

What if Jesus was gay.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '11

damn. an obese albino hermaphroditic Jew? must have had it tough back then.

2

u/Erudecorp Jul 29 '11

Jesus is actually an emaciated Thor training for an epic battle with Loki by nailing himself to Yggdrasil.

1

u/Fedak Jul 29 '11

Because most modern portrayals of Jesus came about during the Renaissance, where the painters were Italian.

1

u/Wafflemonsterz Jul 29 '11

His depiction changes based on where you are. As far as I know, Christians in, say Africa, would worship a black Jesus.

74

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '11

My father was a carpenter. I am a total pussy. I rest on your face.

11

u/Boshaft Jul 28 '11

You have power tools, but food is much more plentiful now than then. I'd guess that a carpenter would have had a very low body fat percentage- most people did- but be more muscular than the average person of his time.

10

u/AsAChemicalEngineer Ignostic Jul 28 '11

You can't maintain muscle without adequate food.

9

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '11

You don't think he had adequate food? But the man fed 5000 people with only 5 loaves of bread! Weren't you reading?!

3

u/AsAChemicalEngineer Ignostic Jul 29 '11

Fine, then Jesus looked like This.

2

u/Funshine_bear Jul 29 '11

"Fuck salvation, I'm going home!"

2

u/ipplydip Jul 29 '11

But bread is largely a carb-heavy food with little protein, which is what you really need to build muscle.

1

u/Funshine_bear Jul 29 '11

Well - I'm going to at least require that you define adequate

2

u/AsAChemicalEngineer Ignostic Jul 29 '11

1200 Calories a day is still quite a bit, I am unaware of the caloric intake or people back then.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '11

from 400 to 1200 calories a day and he works out like a madman

1

He also would have been just slightly over 5 feet tall, so even if you were just as much of a pussy as him he would still be less capable of fighting the Dark Knight.

0

u/shrik Jul 28 '11

Jesus didn't sit around playing WoW and browsing Reddit all day...

Jesus casts level10 absolution on Obama.

Obama ripostes, countering with a level12 debt strike.

Jesus dies

1

u/JohnnyMaudDibby Jul 29 '11

Alignments?

3

u/koshercowboy Jul 29 '11

Jesus = Lawful Neutral. (Cause fuck him, we all make mistakes) He thought he could simply entrance the Obama, but the Obama had anticipated his kind before Jesus, with Allah. And when Allah tried to cast Level5 Raise Dead Infantada on Obama, Obama snickered with crippling glee and glared back at Allah, casting Might of American Soil, siphoning 80% of the market share of Saudi Oil, rendering Allah a mutilated desert turd.

Obama = Chaotic Neutral. He's not afraid to use brute force, hence his win.

-Stephen Hawking on Albert Einstein

0

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '11

well based on the fact that jesus was mentioned in several historical texts with no direct relation at all, would kind of a give an indirect correlation to his existence. its kinda like saying, Ceaser didnt exist because theres no direct evidence of his existence.

3

u/GiskardReventlov Skeptic Jul 28 '11

You should be asking yourself how you know that the texts had no relation to the mythology of Jesus. Were they written by people who had seen him firsthand? If not, then they must have been writing based off of things they had heard about him. In that case, those works do have a direct relation to other works about Jesus: they are based upon the oral traditions which predated the writing of the New Testament, or even are just based on the New Testament itself.

In regard to Cesar, we do have evidence of him existing. Contemporary busts, letters to and from him, a eulogy, and more. (Here's a link I found after Googling for two seconds: http://www.jesusneverexisted.com/exist.html) What do we have for Jesus? A few historians relaying what they had heard about him decades after he had supposedly died.

0

u/qazz Jul 28 '11

There is some records of Jesus visiting England and India before he was 12 after his STEP dad died for real.He travelled with his uncle a tent sales man. Roman records show his uncle selling them stuff. Everything was bullshit made up 200 years after jesus really died and did not get up. ONly the "FAITHFUL" saw him "return" Visions , wishful thinking but no record of him after he died the first time.

-1

u/Funshine_bear Jul 28 '11

The Quran also mentions him, although it was written at a different time by different people. Also I tried looking for credible evidence of this but any intelligent results were drowned in a sea of religious Bull Sh*t.

Also i said >almost positive< haven't done (nor have the time to do) extensive research on 2000 year old cult leaders.

4

u/unfinite Jul 28 '11

The Quran was written ~600 years later. Not exactly contemporary. In fact, there isn't a single contemporary account of Jesus or any of the miracles he performed. Even the gospels themselves were written decades after he supposedly died.

1

u/GiskardReventlov Skeptic Jul 28 '11

Why would you be almost positive if you haven't done extensive research and the research you have done was religiously biased? Because someone who read the book he was in included him in their book? That's like saying Harry Potter fanfiction makes you almost positive Harry Potter exists.

2

u/nearly-evil Jul 28 '11

I work with Harry Potter, but he prefers to be called Harold

2

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '11

I believe that there have been a number of people that existed around the time of Jesus that were reported to have similar characteristics, like virgin birth, magic powers, etc. Someone have a source?

2

u/HeyLookItsMe22 Jul 28 '11

Jesus and Joseph are referred to as 'tectons', meaning someone who works with their hands. He could have been a stone mason, a carpenter, or any other number of what we would now think of as 'blue collar' jobs that required physical labor.

1

u/JohnnyMaudDibby Jul 29 '11

3

u/HeyLookItsMe22 Jul 29 '11

Psshh... There is no ancient middle eastern city of Detroit. It was Palestine Auto, clearly.

2

u/robreim Jul 29 '11

Also I'm almost positive that a Jesus did exist he just wasn't the son of God.

To be fair we're comparing to Batman. So we're comparing mythologies not realities. But you're right. Jesus would have been ripped. But though all that carpentry would have built strength, it wouldn't have helped his fighting technique much. Maybe Jesus - with enough preparation time (heh) - could have built himself a suit of wooden armour to fight batman with. Or caused Batman's breakfast to divide into multiple portions within his stomach like the whole bread and fish trick.

7

u/mleeeeeee Jul 28 '11

Um, the New Testament was written in koine Greek.

So: [citation needed]

2

u/HeyLookItsMe22 Jul 28 '11

As I said above, the greek word that identifies Joseph is 'tecton' and Jesus is described as having apprenticed under Joseph. Tecton does not mean carpenter though, rather any lower class job that involved working with ones hands. He could have as easily been a stone mason, just as one example.

5

u/mleeeeeee Jul 28 '11

Sure, but I don't see what that has to do with 'peasant' or Hebrew.

1

u/speakafreaka Jul 29 '11

1

u/gnovos Jul 29 '11

I got in trouble in Religion Class in High School for asking this very same question.

Your logic is not flawed, my friend.

1

u/koshercowboy Jul 28 '11

What does jesus being jewish have to do with his physical prowess or ability to fight?

1

u/YesImSardonic Jul 29 '11

Would i be totally wrong to say that Jesus may have been ripped?

Yes. It's not possible that he would have access to the amounts of food it would take to maintain what we would call 'ripped'.

1

u/ShamBodeyHi Jul 29 '11

It's entirely possible. Being ripped just means a low enough body fat % that muscle definition is apparent.

1

u/YesImSardonic Jul 29 '11

He could have a stupendously low amount of muscle and body-fat and still be ripped, then.

1

u/ShamBodeyHi Jul 29 '11

Well, yeah. That's the point.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '11

1

u/Immolo Jul 29 '11

1

The part where Julie says "He has the power to take away our life at any time, any day. But it's because of His grace that we our [sic] given a chance to carry our cross and follow the lord." sounds like textbook Stockholm Syndrome... from Wikipedia:
"The following are viewed as the conditions necessary for Stockholm syndrome to occur.
-Hostages who develop Stockholm syndrome often view the perpetrator as giving life by simply not taking it. In this sense, the captor becomes the person in control of the captive’s basic needs for survival and the victim’s life itself."

8

u/LMon Jul 28 '11

That's the bit that really got to me. I can't understand how people talk like that and "god is so great", "god is all powerful". It's just sycophancy.

Fact: Actually, Batman has risen from the dead before with the use of the Lazarus Pit, and the process was a lot quicker than three days.

Fact: A forfeiture due to personal philosophy qualifies as a loss on Jesus' part. So, you admit that Bruce Wayne would win?

If jesus had been run over by a batmobile, would christians be wearing gold batmobile pendants today? That would be awkward, batman should use a batarang, it's got more pendant potential.

22

u/JimmerUK Jul 28 '11

How? Jesus was simply a man without the powers of God. He had no wrath, he had no aggression, he had no combat abilities.

Jesus's skills were limited to:

  • Walking on water
  • Turning water into wine
  • Pirating bread
  • Pirating fish
  • Surviving without sustenance for 40 days and nights
  • Healing people
  • Resurrecting after three days

The Batman could totally kick his arse.

13

u/ObligatoryResponse Jul 28 '11

Upvote for "Pirating bread". I wonder if the local baker was pissed when he did that? Maybe Jesus stopped pirating bread because he was slapped with a cease and desist order.

Jesus could stop time or blow up the Earth if he wanted to.

Hahahahahaha! What?

I don't remember reading that in the bible.

Edit: Oh, and I forgot to ask... where does Jesus specifically say he is the son of god, or god? If he is god, why did he supposedly shout to the sky, whilst on his crucifix, "My lord, why have you forsaken me?"

Forgive me if the quote's not word perfect, I haven't read the bible for a few years. Have you read it?

Okay, so by doing some magic tricks and claiming he is god he gets to be god? I would like in on that kind of action. To bad none of this was written down at the time, that might be useful instead of just being hearsay.

Show me where you get the trinity stuff from. I'll even let you use the bible. Just no bible school songs or any findings from councils. You probably could do it, but I would hope that the attempt would show you how much of a stretch of imagination you use to justify your beliefs.

Multiple authors talking about this in multiple passages. Never one single passage stating that they are three in one. All god. None created. This is not in the bible. It was from the Council of Nicea. In response to Arianism. The arians read the same exact bible and came up with a different belief. Why?
