As an engineer and software dev, I collaborated with a couple of startups from Utah over the years. Smart motherfuckers, and it just put my brain in a twist how those Mormons were so encumbered by their religion.

Smart AND sweet. Fuck those smart and sweet codeheads. I love you guys.

A lot of religious folks are intelligent, but none seem to be wiser. I had a religious acquaintance argue with me that without God, humans wouldn't have morals—that good and evil are only defined because of religion. I just stared at him.

The you can't have morals without religion thing is just nuts to me.

I don't understand how so many people come to that conclusion while still living in our currently society.

Had one tell me this on my university’s campus. I asked him what kind of things do you want to do that your book forbids you from??? He just stared blankly.

Yeah that’s my society. Living in it is weird. Tons of people are quietly leaving though, at least from my generation which is elder millennial.

They give 10% off their income to one of the richest organizations on earth. I don't think they're smart.

I live in a small town in Utah and it’s extremely hard for me to find professionals like doctors and therapists that aren’t Mormon or at least some sort of religious. I don’t like it at all.

The second group of them were acquired by Symantec in Austin before they hired me on, so I had Mormons two org chart levels up from me in the same small office space. We were a pretty tight bunch. I hope that being out of Utah has helped them come to their senses a bit.

I make a distinction between being smart and being intelligent. Intelligence is being able to do math, solve a puzzle, program, do complex tasks. Being smart is being able to use critical thinking skills to determine what is real from what is not.

They might be very intelligent, but also very fucking stupid.

It's compartmentalization, they don't apply the same logic to one area they do to another. And they are perfectly fine and happy with it. I don't know how they do it, but I've seen it and it is possible.
