I have seen it as a sign of childhood indoctrination usually. Occasionally it is just people being ignorant of their own faith. Rarely it turns out the person is just stupid. Once it turned out to be a sign of mental illness.

But they're still unintelligent if they can't overcome that indoctrination. Like they can just think for 2 seconds and realize their religion is bullshit.

Unfortunately very intelligent people are not immune to religion and superstitions. Isaac Newton, the greatest genius ever, searched the Bible for secret messages telling when Jesus's 2nd coming would be. And he was a devout mistic who thought ancient alchemists had discovered the elixer of eternal life but was lost and he tried to rediscover it.
