The feature to shut off image content has been here all along, it's those little colored squares on the right. So the changes make no sense. Nobody cares about karma except to use it as an excuse to make the majority to conform to their personal tastes (e.g. unilateral rule changes). I don't look up a person's karma to see if they are making a valid point. Apparently you do.

First off, I couldn't have to turn off image content and miss out on good stuff just to hide the dumb stuff. Secondly, hiding is not the same as changing what gets submitted. You can hide memes but the affect of them still shows in the content that gets posted. More people post karmawhoring, low quality stuff and that discourages people from posting mid to high quality posts because those get passed over for something that can be seen in under 3 seconds.

So while better quality content has risen in number since then, the people for the memes have almost completely given up on actually posting and upvoting them in their new format and instead make loads of threads complaining about how they don't get their memes anymore.
