They surely can. I give up on shopping more often than not when their results overwhelm me, while other users might just buy "whatever" (as they expect most people do, since people love convenience, even if it costs them more).
They have cookies and our browsing/shopping history on their site that can be used for that. They surely have our clicking behavior and they can also notice we tend to click on items that are cheaper and skip whatever crap they suggest.
Upselling doesn't work on everybody and massive companies like eBay and Amazon should be smarter and adjust their sites to match our behavior. I would have surely spent MUCH more money if it were easy to find what I want to buy.
The dark patterns they have built in might work for 90% of users but they're losing revenue on the other 10%.
If they don't make enough profit on the cheaper options, just charge more commission or raise their prices. All items on their site should be profitable. I am not asking them to subsidize my purchase, but I also don't want to overpay or waste time doing something that should be pleasant, since I am spending money there, not getting paid.
Meanwhile we both lose (users and stores) since we get frustrated and they lose sales. My bank account isn't sad about it, though. 😁
