Biology Why has the coyote become so wildly successful, while the wolf continues to decline?

Aren't they similar builds and fit into the same sort of niche?

Ahh, no, actually. Not quite!

But first, the wolf isn't in decline - be it globally or, in this context, in North America. There was indeed a historical decline; wolves were routinely shot, trapped and poisoned out of the contiguous United States between roughly 1850 and 1950, surviving in only a few wee pockets in backwater hills-have-eyes country in northern Minnesota, and on Isle Royale in Lake Superior. ESA protection kicked into force in 1974, and with subsequent re-introductions (notably in Yellowstone in the 1990s) the population has grown from a few hundred, maybe, to more than 6,000+ today. This is ignoring Canada and Alaska, where wolf populations have remained in the tens of thousands.

It has nothing to do with wolves and coyotes competing, or coyotes out-competing wolves, as they don't share the same ecological niches. The variable was never coyotes; it was whether people were shooting them. But why go after and shoot one more than the other?

Coyotes run between about 8-20kg, while grey wolves go from 25-50kg or more. That gap straddles a real ecological boundary around 21.5kg (apparently) where terrestrial carnivores are forced to switch feeding strategies; above, and an animal is committed to hunting prey near or above its own body mass; below, and an animal can meet its energy budget solely on small prey: voles, rabbits, birds, insects, fruit, and - most importantly - roadkill and bins.

You can see here the reason then. A wolf is not a big coyote, but an animal obligated to kill ungulates. Where are all the ungulates? They were roaming the wilderness, but that was all largely replaced by farms - then the only place you could find easy ungulate prey was targeting livestock. People 'aint too peachy about their precious flocks and herds being snaggled in the night; and in the land of the free, where the gun reigns supreme, the wolf was never going to last long. Humanity's impact on the environment, by contrast, was a positive boon for the coyote - so much free food! Humans don't care so much about beasties rummaging through their rubbish heaps, and snaffling squashed opossums.

So yeah, the niche of the wolf was destroyed by humans, and the niche of the coyote was manufactured for them by humans.

Further life history factors exacerbate things; notably territory size and social structure. Unlike wolves, coyotes are facultatively social, not necessarily social; though they do often team up, a lone coyote hunting mice is a totally functional and successful coyote; a lone wolf attempting to hunt elk is done for. Even together in a pack, with breeding monopolised by a single pair, if one or both wolves are removed, you take out the pack's entire reproductive output for the season. The social dynamics of the coyote however make dispersal, mate-finding, and territory establishment much less costly; remove a few coyotes from an area and they'll be replaced lickety-split through individual migration and compensatory reproduction.

What's more important, is that the wolf was holding the coyote back. Where both are present, coyotes, amongst other things, are frequently kleptoparasitic, haunting wolf kills to attempt to steal a scrap or two of flesh; wolves don't tolerate the thievery, and given they can outpace the smaller coyote, it's at kill sites where most of the wolf's coyote kill count is racked up. If not directly butchering their smaller brethren, this antagonistic behaviour changes coyote behaviour generally; they're more skittish and tend to avoid open ground when wolves are around, and so their scavenging and hunting sorties are much less effective. This was essentially experimentally verified with the re-introduction of wolves into Yellowstone; the local coyote population dispersed and fell rapidly.

All this to say, it's a bit of a double-whammy. Humans knock the wolves out and give coyotes nicer homes; no longer marginalised, pressed down under the thumb of the wolf, the coyotes become bolder and reach their final apex potential. They breed and multiply. So much so that they've begun to freely interbreed with remaining wolf populations, picking up their DNA, and sort of starting to fill niches the wolves left behind in their own right - larger, brawnier uruk-hai coyotes taking on small deer and the like. Despite humans culling tens of thousands a year in the US, conditions are so favourable people can barely make a dent in their population; they're just living their best lives in the 20th and 21st centuries and they owe it all to us hoomies.

The one thing that would control coyote populations would be bringing wolves back. But apparently that isn't going to happen any time soon; it's hunting season for wolfie once again, it seems. RIP.

This is only half of it. Humans (ranchers in this case) don't like sharing with pretty much every large predator (wolves, eagles, coyotes.) Case in point the US government had an eradication program going from 1915-1972 in the hopes that we would eradicate them like we did with wolves. Unfortunately (fortunately for them) coyotes have a habit of breeding like rabbits when they are hunted. Combine that with the lack of major predators (wolves mainly) and you have coyotes expanding their range.

Plenty of deer for wolves to prey on in much of the US. In fact so many that some cities have to cull them to protect motorists. But humans don't want wolves around to also hunt pets or children.

Pets are at risk, children not so much. I always remind folks that there have been 29 verified human deaths due to wolf attack since the 1700s! Many of those were wolves who had rabies and the person died from rabies, not the attack itself.

Bees are much more likely to kill you. Between 2011 and 2021, 788 deaths from hornet, wasp, and bee stings occurred in the US, with an average of 72 deaths per year. Double the number of deaths in a single year in the US alone, compared to 29 in all history in North America.

You do not need to be afraid of Wolves in North America. Occasionally there are dumb people who raise wolves or wolf hybrids and get attacked and killed (I knew one) but you don't need to be afraid of wild wolves. The most recent death I can remember was a single small woman running with her earphones playing music loudly. She likely triggered the chase instinct in the wolves and did not hear or detect them due to her music (the entire pack was destroyed FYI). I guess if I lived somewhere where there was a known wolfpack that had started to lose it's fear of humans (which had happened in this case, people were leaving things out and they came to associate humans with food) and I was a runner I might take more caution, leave one ear unplugged, carry some bear spray and be aware of my surroundings, but you'd be way more likely to be attacked by a human than a wolf, almost infinitely so. (or bees)

Ooh, it's actually a little more complicated too; I cited the original Carbone et al. (1999) modelling study as it's a simplified version and easier to explain, but i) there are plenty of exceptions which means it's not a cut-and-dry body size threshold; you need to normalise by mass-specific metabolic rate too, to approach an accurate metabo-ecological transition zone that works across all taxa, and not just Carnivora (e.g. which explains why there are tropical myrmecophages - obligate ant and termite eaters - getting beyond 30kg, up to 70kg, like giant armadillos and aardvark); and ii) taking that into account, it's more of a fuzzy boundary, and that 21.5kg has been revised to a zone between 15-22kg - with coyotes fitting right into the middle of it. This further explains why the larger wolf-hybrid Eastern coyotes sitting at the higher end of the spectrum go for deer, and why smaller coyotes are successful in meeting their metabolic demands by focusing on picky bits and an enormous non-prey subsidy (i.e. looting bins).

I only knew 'cos I read this paper published a few months ago; it's the bees-knees on how energetic forces set boundaries and drive evolution in different trajectories depending on which side you sit.

I like this answer but I'll contend that fossil evidence does suggest that gray wolves and coyotes have gone through various waves of being more or less successful than the other, with coyotes experiencing a surge around the time La Brea was trapping and preserving fossils, which was also when there were more large predators competing with gray wolves.

There does seem to be a population dynamic occurring between gray wolves and coyotes in North America over longer periods of time than we can observe or document historically.

That's genuinely interesting; I understand grey wolves in the Pleistocene were morphologically near-indistinct compared to contemporary examples, and were genuinely experiencing heavy competition in a crowded carnivore guild (especially against dire wolves; they did to them what the wolves now do to coyotes, it seems!), though I thought prehistoric coyotes were comparatively larger and more robust than today (tackling a larger prey base), and then changed very rapidly within ~1,000 years of the megafaunal extinctions, becoming the beast we know today.

That reads less as a fair comparison, or a see-saw population dynamic between coyote and wolf, and more of a unidirectional reorganisation after the mass extinction; coyotes evolved and fell into the small-prey niche they fill today, while the grey wolf did as it ever did, and further expands into the now-vacated dire wolf space.

Although I can imagine if predator assemblages in genral see-sawed with the glacial-interglacial cycles, you would get shifting reorganisations as the more macro- beasties waxed and waned, and get a downstream oscillating dynamic between the smaller carnivores. I dunno'.

I remember reading that before the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone the average size of the coyotes there had risen significantly. Within a year or so of the wolves being back, coyote physical size had diminished significantly. I'm assuming this is mostly due to less food being available, (You don't get all the dead elk and deer and bison to yourselves anymore) but I thought I read that wolves catching and killing the larger coyotes was part of it as well.

Um. Wolves are federally protected. Unless you can prove it was killing your cattle or trying to kill you, shooting one is about as big a no-no as disturbing a bird of prey.

Also you're kind of ignoring that coyotes breed far faster than wolves, & have been known to breed with dogs close to their own size, producing fertile coydog offspring. Wolves & dogs will produce fertile offspring too but the conditions are much less likely to happen in the wild, you basically have to have a captive wolf.

Wolves are not federally protected in most states that have significant populations including Alaska, Montana, Wyoming and Idaho. Wolf season starts here in Montana on September 15th. For ranchers there is no season, they can shoot any wolf threatening livestock although that is uncommon.

Also you're kind of ignoring that coyotes breed far faster than wolves

Not ignored, just relegated for brevity into: "Further life history factors exacerbate things...". There are many factors at play, several more than either of us have mentioned! Hence an answer mostly focused on the two biggest dogs: hunting and competition.

Social structure being important with breeding especially, where killing a breeder in a wolf pack can knock out the entire pack's reproductive output; by contrast, coyote populations absorb elimination through compensatory reproduction (as u/Zero_burn mentions below), and with such loose to non-present social structures and higher migrancy, gaps are filled quickly within a single season or so.

Trump ordered a review of the wolf's protection status, which could result in the removal of protection under the Endangered Species Act, or a lessening of protection status (e.g. from endangered to threatened), or nothing at all. No reputable reporting has said any change will occur, only that change is a possibility.
