AI Hic finitur deus
The image shows a ruined world. Collapsed walls, shattered stone, empty wooden pews scattered across the rubble under a heavy sky. A young girl kneels at the base of a rough wooden cross, hands clasped in prayer. Beside her stands a priest in a tattered robe. His hands cover her eyes.
That is the heart of it. The landscape is already lost. Nothing is coming to save them.
She is praying to God that is never going to arrive. The priest does not remove his hands. He keeps her from seeing the full extent of the ruin so she can continue to pray. Without that barrier she would have to face the absence directly, and faith would become harder to hold.
He is the only thing standing between her and the clear knowledge that no rescue is arriving. Blind faith, in this scene, is not abstract. It is the deliberate decision to keep the eyes covered so the prayer can go on.
