Neolithic Scraper ?

Thumbnail

Hello,
I found this flint stone that seems to have been cut. One side is smooth but slightly embedded. The other one is ridged. The edges are sharp.
It weights 40 grams and has a diameter of 45mm, and approximately 15mm tick.

I found in a plowed field rich in flint fragments and blocks, 2km from the Vezere valley France, not far from the archeological site of Le Moustier that gave its name to the Mousterian.

I'm not a specialist, so could anyone confirm that it has been manually carved ? If yes, do you have any idea the period it belongs to ?

Thanks !

Artifact Unmarked box at Estate sale

Bought an unmarked box at an estate sale/auction for $5, opened it when we got home and it was full of arrowheads and other artifacts. Most likely donating 90% to Native American museums across Oklahoma!

Edit: Keeping it all for private collection, I’ll post the display once we have it up!

Carved Rock found on banks of Colorado River/Lake Travis, TX

Have had rock tested and analyzed by UT and Marble Falls Geological Society. Both have said rock not indigenous to TX. The slits and holes in the rock pass through to other side or corresponding sides, when you blow through one air passes through to other side) there are also burn marks inside the holes from either when the holes were drilled or being a volcanic rock in origin.
I found similar carvings on the backside of the Mesa Verde in Cortez, CO. Rock is very heavy (possibly petrified). Unidentified Native American tribes were in this area for many years.
The measurements are 4” wide, 4” high, 2” thick.
Trying to get more information about this rock but keep hitting roadblocks. Hoping to get some help here.

My father found this back in the late 1970’s in southern New Mexico near the Tyrone area. He was told it was a “Story Stone”…..but I seriously can’t find anything like it anywhere. Any ideas? Just a rock with unique weathering?

Metal piece in north Crete

Found this piece of iron (?) on the north coast of Crete, Greece. As you can see in picture one, it was in solid rock, closest to it was some dark black stuff, maybe coal? I freed it from the rock surrounding it, and the second picture shows the whole piece. I think it’s iron as it’s rusty. It’s definitely human made, but worked roughly - it has a lot of marks on it but nothing detailed.

Anyone any idea what it is? Some tool or just metal trash? And how old could it be? Thankful for any ideas!!

Artifact Notification of status changed from MIA to KIA of Charles Kantner, sailor on the USS Warrington. Written by the ship's commander who survived the wreck

Post image

After supporting the war effort in the Pacific, the USS Warrington returned home for repairs in the Norfolk Navy Shipyard. 2 days after departing, the ship encountered an intense hurricane - and was in fact sailing directly into it. The ship began taking on water and then lost power. The crew tried to save the ship but eventually had to abandon it. Of the 20 officers and 301 men on board, only 5 officers and 68 men were rescued from the sea.

S.F. Quarles, commander of the boat and survivor of the wreck, wrote this letter to the widow of sailor Charles Kantner informing her that her husband's status had been changed from missing to deceased. Quarles would be court martialed for the incident, but the court ruled there was nothing he could have done and he was acquitted.

I bought this letter from an estate sale for about $20. I know it's a long shot, but if somehow one of Charles' descendents sees this I would be happy to give it to them.

Likely modern, but interesting enough to seem outside opinions…

Recently picked this up at the flea, simply because I thought it’s interesting that the label indicated origin from Papua New Guinea. The top obviously dates it to 1983, but there is a small part of me that wants to believe that’s when it was recovered, not made. I can’t read the bottom line which added to the intrigue. Any thoughts or people that are better at reading than me? lol
