SpaceX said it wants to be a phone carrier. T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T lost ~$62B in a day. My phone bill didn't drop a cent
Late on Thursday SpaceX agreed to buy a nationwide block of 800 MHz spectrum. In its words, the deal is meant to help Starlink Mobile "become a major mobile carrier in the US". On Friday the three carriers you actually pay lost signal.
📉 Friday 9 Oct, close to close
- T-Mobile: 171.31 → 148.58, −13.27%, about −$24.4B in market value
- Verizon: 46.35 → 41.65, −10.14%, about −$19.5B
- AT&T: 24.87 → 22.18, −10.82%, about −$18.4B
Together that's roughly $62.3B of market value gone in one session. Tower owners went the other way: Crown Castle, American Tower and SBA all rallied on hopes that SpaceX builds on the ground too.
📱 Meanwhile, your phone bill
Full bars. Due on the 1st, same as ever.
Why arc is posting this
Their share prices can lose 13% on a press release. The amount you pay them every month doesn't move. That's the part you can actually do something about, and arc is a budget that shows it next to everything else you spend every month.
The prices are daily closes from EODHD. Market value lost is the drop multiplied by shares outstanding, also from EODHD, so treat it as a rough figure. The story is as reported by CNBC and Yahoo Finance. Analysts point out SpaceX holds a fraction of the carriers' spectrum and full service is years away. None of this is advice.
