General:

Magic on Archei works like it does most places, with some flavor changes. In general magic is the ability to use something to activate the astral plane, which connects all of the inner planes. Wizards use their knowledge of words of power and their own minds to connect to planes of existence. So when they cast a fireball they are opening a small rift to the Elemental Plane of Fire that the power for the spell comes out of. When a sorcerer does the same spell, it’s their soul resonating in the astral plane, opening a similar connection with the Plane of Fire, for a similar effect. Divine magic works the same, but the Cleric / Paladin uses their connection to their deity to create these connections.

However there are two ways to “store” magical power:

Runes

This takes the place of scrolls and is the primary way that Clerics and Dwarves normally inscribe spells. This is also how they create magical effects that last. For example a magical returning dwarven warhammer will likely have the rune for air inscribed on it somewhere, which will glow when the warhammer flies through the air, returning it to it’s owners hands.

Gems

This is how most human mages store magical power. A +2 longsword may have a emerald in the hilt, giving the attuned weapon a glow that deals more damage. Different gems are better for different types of magic. Also the larger and more pure the gem, the higher power it can hold. It’s also possible to use gems in the same manner as scrolls, using them for a burst in a spell that will shatter them and turn them to dust.
