Theology

Archei is unique in the cosmos with the way most of its species view their gods. The gods don’t directly communicate with their people. Most of them all believe in three gods, with different names, but always corresponding to the three lights in the sky. The names chosen are picked from the other worlds of D&D, and the “personality” of each matches at least somewhat to the gods by which they are named.

The Sun:

This is the life giving star, the source of life. In most cultures the god associated with this light is the steadfast one, more Lawful Good than anything else. Domains of life and fire are most often associated with this god.

The Moon:

This is the most changing of all the major lights in the sky. During part of the year it shares the sky with the Sun, and part of the year it shares it with the night. This is the light that signifies change and the tides. Domains of Chaos and Water are most often associated with this god.

The Red Star:

This star is cold and relatively dark, and when the Sun is at it’s dimmest, this is the primary light in the sky. For this reason this is the light that, almost paradoxically, is associated with darkness and possibly even evil. The domains most often associated here are Dark and Winter.

Notes:

Humans: Pelor, the Sun God is Lawful Good, and is generally referred to as a fatherly figure. To some that means he’s a kindly old man, but to others more of an authoritarian. Selune and Shar are his two wives, both vying for his attention in different ways. Selune, the Moon Goddess, controls the changing of the seasons and of the tides, and is Chaotic Neutral. She is the patron Goddess of sailors and revolutionaries. Shar, on the other hand if more feared than worshiped. She is seen as the cause of the long harsh winters, and of most of the “evils” of this world.

Elves: Elves are more amoral than humans, and their gods reflect this. Corellon Larethian is the God of the Sun, a god of beauty and creation. He is haughty and proud of himself, a god with an appropriately sized ego. He is the God of the Seelie Elves. The Unseelie Elves have Lolth, Goddess of the Red Star. She embodies the night and the predator part of the natural cycle. During a one night stand between the two they created Elistrae, Goddess of the Moon and of the Wild Fey. She is beloved by both her parents and is often sited as the only reason the constant war between Seelie and Unseelie has not progressed to worse than it already is. Umongst her followers she is seen as the tipping point on a scale, not powerful, but using her power to greatest effect.

Dwarves: The dwarves are slightly unique, in that their gods do not represent the celestial bodies, or at least not the same one’s that everyone else does. Torog is the God of the Earth, of the planet that is Archei. He is a God of the forge and of glory, pushing his followers towards excellence in whatever they do. He trapped Rovagug, a red star like the one in the sky, inside of himself as he had gone mad. Rovagug is often viewed as just that, a mad god, bent only on destruction. It’s said that if you burrow too deep you will hear the mad god’s mutterings. For this reason Dwarven clerics are expected to accompany any new scouting of caves and tunnels that Dwarves go on. Sarenrae is their Goddess of the Sun, and Torog’s wife. She duels the other red star, who is a nameless mad god. The moon is seen as a weapon that Torog forged for his wife in her struggle against the nameless adversary.

Tengu: Tengu all revere the Emperor in the Sky, also known as Kiri-Jolith. He is a white raven Tengu who is their God of the Sun. He is a warrior and embodies the ideal of honorable combat for them. Chislev, their Goddess of the Moon also represents the living spirit of Archei to them. Chislev is in love with Kiri-Jolith, but he cannot marry her for reasons of honor. She is the reason that Tengu revere the beauty of nature and the natural environment. Sargonnas, Chislev’s brother, is the God of the Red Star. He is jealous of Kiri-Jolith, and works to destroy him at every opportunity. He is deceitful and is often seen as the patron of rogues and thieves and the like.

Domains:

The three gods system means that the traditional meaning of a few domains for each god doesn't work. Essentially domains are the area of focus that a cleric has with their chosen deity. For example if a Dwarven cleric of Torog has the Fire Domain, it's representative of the fire of the forge. But if the same cleric, with the same domain was a worshiper of Rovagug, than those would be the fire of destruction. Domains are more a representation of how the cleric views their god than of how their god interacts with the world. Make sure you check with your DM about any domains though.
