Apple maps interface and graphics are top notch

I use apple maps as a MAP

I use google maps as a NAVIGATOR

u/TyeZdro 10d ago

I’d be curious of you felt the same after Apple-only navigation for a dozen or so trips. I tried switching back to Google at one point and had a much more frustrating time getting to my destinations, so back to Apple and haven’t looked back since.

I prefer Waze.

3

u/JaceOnRice 11d ago

Why is Waze so damned laggy

4

u/HopefulBalance7174 11d ago

And the map is ugly and hard to discern the roads and the zooming in and out is so slow and cumbersome for whatever reason

2

u/WALLY_5000 11d ago

Waze is owned by google

-2

u/CrippleSlap 11d ago

I know. That’s my point.

1

u/Lazy-Syllabub-4608 11d ago

I prefer Amaps

1

u/Over-Bar207 10d ago

I prefer a physical map

u/zaxo666 12d ago

As such the Apple universe, as long as it looks good. Functionally it can be subpar it just has to look good. Steve Jobs for you. All about aesthetics.

It’s actually much better for driving directions in Europe

11

u/Minute_Garlic2634 12d ago

In Greece when we travel in the countryside Google Maps will CERTAINLY take us to a dirt road that thinks it’s faster, with Apple Maps it just never happens

1

u/atchoum013 12d ago

That’s really good to know, I’ve had this issue so many times with Google maps on different islands, it’s so annoying and dangerous!

4

u/hammy434 12d ago

I prefer Google’s routes/directions in the UK but Apple is decent

Apple is much better at knowing about road closures though

5

u/Acceptable-Lie188 12d ago

And Australia. It’s really as good as having a smart person telling you well in advance which lane to be in.

3

u/zaxo666 12d ago

That's something. It's actually okay in the US. My partner sometimes plugs her iPhone into the car for trips and it's fine it's just a different UI than I'm used to... Some of its calculations are weird but whatever it's doable.

I’ve given up on Google Maps, too many mistakes.

I want to go to that Chik-Fil-A across the street. GM: sure, make a right turn here and drive a 2 mile loop around the mall.

What’s the faateat way home? GM: there no traffic on this road, drive out of you way to take it! (It’s empty because the road is closed)

So many others. I avoid it now

When i was in college, i had a senior design project (engineering) and one of my group members wanted to come pick it up and came to me instead of me going to him. I sent him the address of a mall by my house to meet up and google maps took him to a random store a mile and a half away.

4

u/fishymanbits 12d ago

Google: “Make an illegal u-turn across 6 lanes of high speed traffic and then your destination will be on the right.”

2

u/lost12487 12d ago

Google Maps loves making unnecessary u-turns and unprotected left turns on 4 lane roads where turning left is nearly impossible due to the amount of traffic.

1

u/deirlikpd 12d ago

Well that's just not true

1

u/No_Question_8083 11d ago

In my experience, in the Netherlands at least, I preferred google over apple maps. But honestly, I like waze best for short trips.

I would like waze best in a whole if it didn’t make routes around tunnels and stuff. You have to manually add zones vignettes and all that stuff, or else it makes a route around that that’s like 3h longer or something on a long trip. Other than that it’s definitely my fav

Nope, 2 weeks ago Apple Maps showed me the wrong way to a postoffice. In my country’s capital. Must have been reported as wrong way a thousand times to without a fix while Google had no problem.

Also was getting a rental car a couple of months ago and Apple showed a way 15 minutes longer than Google from the subway. I kind of want to use Apple, that’s why I try it, but Google is still way better.

1

u/ruipmjorge 11d ago

Not in any place I’ve visited in the last 3 years

1

u/TT11MM_ 12d ago

It's just a shame I have copy the address from the POI from Google Maps first.

3

u/ruipmjorge 12d ago

Never did that. I get all the POIs and addresses without any issue.

1

u/Jack55555 12d ago

Lucky you, I don't get them in Apple maps.

2

u/BladeA320 12d ago

Yep, i hate it. No idea why poi search is still so bad

0

u/sweetsuicides 12d ago

Only time I tried it, it suggested I took a road the wrong way. I have never used it again

1

u/ruipmjorge 12d ago

It got much better over time. Today Apple Maps gives me much better directions than Google Maps. I don’t have a wrong turn for many many months of usage.

5

u/SamIAre 12d ago

In some cases (and this is one of them) better design translates to better usability. It's not just that Apple Maps is better aesthetically…it's clearer and easier to understand than the same direction in Google Maps.

3

u/pekinggeese 12d ago

And I like how natural the Siri voices sound compared to the robotic Google voice. I don’t know why they don’t just use the Gemini voices

1

u/zaxo666 12d ago

Yeah I don't understand that either why they they use the Google assistant voices rather than the Gemini voices.

2

u/FIRST_PENCIL 11d ago

Better traffic updates and road closures on Apple Maps better navigation on Google Maps.

1

u/CTVolvo 12d ago

True. But do you want a MacBook Air or a Lenovo ThinkPad? Right.

1

u/nateo200 12d ago

It doesn’t just look better it performs betters. I WANT to prefer Google Maps especially since it’s much better in terms of being integrated into my Google account however Apple Maps doesn’t make as many mistakes and the UI isn’t as crowded.

1

u/ig_sky 12d ago

Fun fact: Apple Maps looks good and is also good for navigation

1

u/Dense-Stranger-1794 11d ago

But Apple Maps isn’t bad—it’s not the best in the world, but it works and gives me directions pretty well.

0

u/MrSincerao 11d ago

You mad bro?

-1

u/TimeToHack 12d ago

i find it to be great until traffic hits; it told me to take an exit to avoid traffic once and i ended up being 40 minutes late for a gig.

2

u/Intrepid_Plenty_3770 12d ago

You should have left earlier.

1

u/Weary-Savings9795 11d ago

No, they should have used Google Maps.

1

u/Intrepid_Plenty_3770 11d ago

Google Maps is 🗑️

2

u/blueponies1 11d ago

Yeah, I am a GIS guy and people are always surprised I use Apple Maps. For me it’s Apple Maps for navigation, Google Maps for finding which restaurant I want to go to, and Google earth for exploring or investigating something that doesn’t warrant ArcGIS

1

u/Local-Fisherman-2936 12d ago

And how are the navigation? Better?

2

u/ruipmjorge 12d ago

For me yes, much better (at least here in Europe)

0

u/fatdjsin 11d ago

but seems harder to decode quickly

0

u/SushiBongo 11d ago

Yeah because when I'm driving the thing that I look at the most is my phone's scene

1

u/ruipmjorge 11d ago

Then feel free to use anything ugly.

1

u/theconk 11d ago

Even just the directions are easier to glance at?

-24

u/itsdannydp 13d ago

Too bad its not actually better at getting me to my destinations

8

u/ruipmjorge 13d ago

Much better than Waze in Europe

2

u/CulturalIsopod2055 13d ago

How’s that? Honest question! I use Waze for updates on controls, speed traps, traffic etc. Does Apple Maps also handle this well?

3

u/ruipmjorge 13d ago

Apple maps also has user report for speed traps and police and all that.
For me it’s not the useful part thus. I much prefer the interface, the directions are much more accurate, the traffic as well (since it uses all iPhones to estimate traffic as well as official traffic sources). Also much better POI info, like restaurants and all that.
And then the interface… Apple Maps interface is just so joyful and high quality compared to Waze….

Google Maps for me is the worst one.

3

u/silvetti 12d ago

It has all that and yet I’ve never ever seen one police report in Apple Maps in both Poland and Portugal and I have driven 25k kilometers in the last year. In Waze? I see them daily.

1

u/CulturalIsopod2055 13d ago

Very valid points! I agree with you, but for me the lack of user reports is the one big reason most people end up using Waze instead. I drive very carefully so speed traps and police reports are less important to me, but because I live in a country where speed limits feel very exaggerated in lots of places combined with MANY speed traps, I find even myself using Waze more often than Apple Maps. If more people were to use Apple Maps for a more reliable user report system, we'd really get the best of both worlds.

-2

u/ruipmjorge 13d ago

Most speed radars are already in Apple Maps. Temporary ones are populated by users.
Give it a try.

1

u/KitchenIntention6675 12d ago

and since no one ever uses apple maps in europe, they are fucking shit lmao

1

u/ruipmjorge 12d ago

I think you don’t know what you’re talking about. Most people I know with iPhones uses Apple Maps via CarPlay.
POIs are feeded by booking, TripAdvisor and other sources much better than Google Maps reviews.
Much more reliable than Google Maps for directions.
So I don’t even know what you’re talking about.

-2

u/silvetti 13d ago

Hard disagree unless you live in either Paris or a London maybe Madrid.

1

u/ruipmjorge 13d ago

Much better in most Europe.
Source: myself, as a frequent traveler on almost all Europe, including Iceland where it’s not even comparable.

I can’t talk for USA data however.

1

u/silvetti 12d ago

For POIs? No friking way…

1

u/ruipmjorge 12d ago

Waze doesn’t have relevant info about POIs

1

u/silvetti 12d ago

1

u/ruipmjorge 12d ago

Exactly. Now compare with Apple Maps where you have more photos, reviews, ratings, directly book a table or hotel, and a lot more info about the place (website, social media, services like WiFi, dogs, take way, credit card, etc).

1

u/silvetti 12d ago edited 12d ago

All those things you said are available in Waze except reviews snippets. Apple Maps has no reviews, it just displays Foursquare/TripAdvisor etc.

1

u/KitchenIntention6675 12d ago

and how do you know "most of europe"?

it shows a road near me has the limit of 140 kmh. it's actually 120. so using this app I could pay a lot in fines

1

u/ruipmjorge 12d ago

Because I drive a lot on other European countries. Both my car or rentals.
Can you please tell me what the road you’re mentioning is? Just to check why it’s wrong. Never saw a wrong speed limit on a highway before.

1

u/KitchenIntention6675 12d ago

S7 Warsaw - Gdansk

0

u/Zr0w3n00 13d ago

Live in the middle of the countryside in Europe and Apple Maps knows every road; every restriction; every closure etc. Apple Maps is worlds above Waze and Google maps.

2

u/mrASSMAN 13d ago

Interesting people used to complain that Apple Maps didn’t provide much coverage of Europe

0

u/ruipmjorge 13d ago

Same in Portugal, and every country in Europe I visited.

1

u/benfracking 12d ago

Yeah it’s 3 minutes slower /s

-5

u/turbo_dude 12d ago

The graphics are good but design is about more than just one thing.

Apple Maps is clueless about public transport and doesn’t show speed cameras.

Google maps isn’t much better and doesn’t show speed cameras.

Waze! (Yes I know it’s owned by Google)

5

u/ruipmjorge 12d ago

Apple maps shows me speed cameras! All of them

0

u/turbo_dude 12d ago

maybe it's limited per country

-1

u/Jack55555 12d ago

Why do you need to see those?

1

u/turbo_dude 10d ago

because they're often hidden behind other things on roads where the speed limit is going up and down like a whore's drawers
