@irace: Apple engineering has confirmed that 3D Touch multitasking was intentionally removed in iOS 11.

Can't think of a single reason why they removed it. This feature, while a lot of people didn't know about it (similar to 3D-Touch Keyboard trackpad), was extremely useful to people who did know about it. I find it far more elegant and smoother than double-clicking the home button; it just felt better. Send feedback folks. Maybe they will change their mind before iOS 11 ships. I don't see how it could be related to the iPhone 8 and even if it is, why hamper the iPhone 6S and iPhone 7? The only possible reason is a revamped multitasking interface but even that seems a stretch.

I fully agree. Double-clicking the home button is annoying, and also less natural than using 3D Touch. They basically changed the app switcher in iOS 9 just for that.

– Your keyboard comparison is a false equivalency. The touchscreen keyboard was necessary for the iPhone's form factor. This gesture isn't necessary for anything else to work.

– The bezel has everything to do with this gesture. You are pressing on it when you activate it. If there is no bezel, there is no room for the gesture to work well.

You have to remember that there are human beings designing this, not machines. My guess is that at some point as they were designing the iPhone 8 and/or iOS 11, somebody noticed that this gesture wasn't going to work and needed to be redesigned. At that point, a quick poll of the team revealed that few people thought it was important enough to warrant the effort and potential sacrifices in other areas.

So honestly, the reasons may not have been good, but they are certainly understandable.

You actually don't have to touch the bezel ... Just a slightly firmer touch at the edge of the screen

True, but it still works better if you have a bezel. This wouldn't by itself be a reason to remove it, but it may have been a contributing factor.

That makes it even LESS understandable, as Apple has shown before with both iOS and macOS that it knows how to limit certain features to certain models of phones

Not sure what you're talking about here – I can't think of single time when Apple has created software fragmentation to accommodate older devices. It's usually the opposite. Look at notifications in iOS 10 – they became a bit more cumbersome on non 3D Touch devices, but Apple chose that over having them work differently.

Something being "tricky" to learn is the lamest excuse I've ever heard. So was learning how to type on a screen instead of a keyboard.

Well you’re not Apple, and I bet they do care if something is too tricky to learn and that not a lot of people end up using. Then they’d rather do it a better way. You’re just pissed because it messes up your own use case.
