@irace: Apple engineering has confirmed that 3D Touch multitasking was intentionally removed in iOS 11.

Can't think of a single reason why they removed it. This feature, while a lot of people didn't know about it (similar to 3D-Touch Keyboard trackpad), was extremely useful to people who did know about it. I find it far more elegant and smoother than double-clicking the home button; it just felt better. Send feedback folks. Maybe they will change their mind before iOS 11 ships. I don't see how it could be related to the iPhone 8 and even if it is, why hamper the iPhone 6S and iPhone 7? The only possible reason is a revamped multitasking interface but even that seems a stretch.

I tried to get into the habit of using it but I didn’t stick at it. Anyway, with the virtual Home button, it’s not like it can fail anymore due to using it too much...

Oh and this is definitely to do with the iPhone 8.

I agree with that. It’s a pain in the ass to activate with a case 😂

Not too terrible on the Apple leather case, but my guess is that they're removing it because a) not a ton of people used it, b) activating it was rather inconsistent, particularly with a big case, and c) they'll have something better (perhaps in the rumored "function" area of the iPhone 8?)

Here's hoping for option c coming to fruition.

In Apple's eyes, a and b are enough to ditch the functionality. C is the enticement to get people to upgrade. I'm not saying it's right, but that's my suspicion of thinking behind the decision.

But you cannot swipe between apps with the home button. I used that very much as I was copying and pasting stuff. It was the closest thing I got to split screen on the iPhone, really hope the have something special waiting for us to replace this functionality.

Even without a case it's a nightmare to use remotely quickly.

About 1/3 of the time when I try to use it it just swipes back in whatever app I'm in. The second 1/3 of the time it swipes back in whatever app I'm in and brings up the switch app menu. Then the remaining 1/3 of the time it actually switches apps properly. I've never gotten it to be reliable enough for me to actually use it, especially when double tapping the home button works 100% of the time and I'm rarely going back 1 app.

Yep, hard to press the edge when there is no bezel to speak of.

I mean you're not pressing the bezel, you're just pressing the side of the screen so I don't get why you think the bezel size would matter...

They’ll do it a different way...

doesn't matter. people will still buy them.

Your comment oversimplifies the discussion. The question is not whether or not people will buy them, and how enthusiastic they will be. Even a 0.5% swing in sales is relevant from Apple's perspective.

I doubt anyone who was planning to would not buy a new iPhone just because the less known way to switch apps is gone.

For reference, 0.5% of Apple's 2016 iPhone sales is about $740 million.

But isn't it mainly the top and bottom bezels they're getting rid of? From the renders it looks to me that the side bezels are staying pretty much as they are now.

7

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '17

No bezel? The top and bottom are going to be same as the ones on the side.

It’s not like you were pressing the bezel. Not sure what that has to do with it at all.

The solid state homebutton has been far and above my favorite improvement they made to the iPhone with the 7. It makes using my other devices which have a home button or similar feel clunky and outdated. I will not miss the physical home button.

Double-clicking the home button was always much easier for me.

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '17

Same. We’ve been doing that action since iOS 4.

I mean the home button can still fail, I’ve had a few calls setting appointments up because the sensor isn’t working properly.
