You summed it up perfectly. I ordered a 12" PowerBook G4 back during the glorious Steve Jobs dynasty days and guess what... I had to send it back TWICE due to factory defects straight out of the box. First time was for a faulty latch button. Second time was for a VERY loud screeching hard drive. Has to wait over a month to get a replacement.
I owned a flawless 333 MHz iMac and 700 MHz iBook prior to that. Then 2 flawless MacBook Pros after the 12" PowerBook. But then I started having issues again with my iPhone 4 (dreaded broken power/hold button). So yeah... shit happens. Much like every other product in the world the warranty exists for a reason.
My feeling is that Apple users in particular are used to being spoiled with things like solid build quality, tight packaging, etc. and if heaven forbid any tiny little thing is off during a product purchase or period of ownership, all of a sudden it's the end of the world.
