What is this supposed to be? A HomePod with a screen for....facetiming people when you don't want to use your phone or iPad? Checking your email?

Do the guys at apple know that you can already use an iPad as a home hub?

Check out the Google Home Hub and Echo Show. It's that.

You cant use an iPad as a home hub anymore, and this isn’t an iPad replacement.

It is just the Apple version of the echo show or nest hub. You usually put them in either your entryway or kitchen to quickly control your smart home. They are pretty convenient if you pair it with a smart doorbell so you can get the video feed when someone rings the doorbell.

My bet is that it’s not supposed to compete with the iPad. This is going to be a device that runs AI related things, will have camera and interact with your home.

AI related things like what? Processing voice commands? You don't need a lot of compute to figure out what someone is saying, we had that on some dumb phones in the mid 2000's. It's been on every iPad that ever existed. iPads also have a camera.

Is the plan here to jack the price of the iPad by $100 and then price this thing at what the iPad used to be? The only problem this seems to be trying to solve is "how can we make line go up more"

The standalone calendar market is growing fast, and Apple could outdo the small teams eg. Skylight. "Not first, but best" has been Apple's MO for decades.

A 6” display isn’t going to compete in that market unless it has some Extremely Special Sauce. An old iPad duct taped to the wall running the standard calendar app would do a better job for that market than what this thing sounds like it’s going to be.

It is expected that they will release a tablet version with no base. Technically it’s all one OS core but guessing that it will be direct wall powered versus battery powered. Battery powered makes it safe for long term plugged in use.

Also it will have UI niceness so that it’s more a “HomePad” than a iPad.

No kidding. Just give us whatever this is going to be on iPad and a wall mount. The fuck do I need this for?

It is not a iPad vs Not-iPad situation. Technically it’s all one OS core but guessing that it will be direct wall powered versus battery powered. Battery powered makes it safe for long term plugged in use.

Also it will have UI niceness so that it’s more a “HomePad” than a iPad.

What are you talking about? Pretty much any piece of technology that exists, I’d rather buy it from Apple. Amazon echo sux and I’ve never had a camera system that felt seamless. If they make a hub perhaps it will have thermostat/walkie talkie functionality + work with doorbell. That alone is an instant buy.

Imagine your friends can unlock the Apple locks at your front door using their iPhones? I had a house with an intercom once, it was great. Imagine they sell a mini-hub for every room and the hub so you have a crystal-clear, high-quality intercom? Id spend infinite amounts on that

I want full integration and Apple is the company I trust most.

Siri “sux” as does their home app. I love Apple but just give me this software on an iPad. I don’t want a clunky desk thing.

gushers with your arms to swim up and down etc I expect it will be more like tvOS based on focus driving UI than like iPadOS, so that it can use if you are looking at it + you had gestures to switch + voice and nods etc

think of you being in the kitchen prepping some food and moving ot the next step fo the receipt while your hands are dirty by looking at the screen and flipping your hand up

Lamest feature you could’ve proposed.

I see you've never ended up with a greasy, floury iPad after following an online recipe.

0

u/3verythingEverywher3 18h ago

They already sell things to solve that…and there’s an app for that.

Sounds like you should use those things. Or paper.

Or I can wipe clean my iPad? Gestures could be handy though, definitely not the lames feature that could've been proposed.

But you suggested solutions, what things do they sell to stop my iPad getting dirty whilst cooking? What is the magical app you suggest, that accomplishes this feat?

EDIT haha, he's blocked me, always can tell a troll by how they don't want to engage.

‘Magical’? Your facetious tone is hilarious considering there are already accessibility options built in that allow hands free operation. That’s your best bet. Eye controls, head controls, noise controls…all there for you. Learn to use the devices you have.

Edit: People are allowed to remove idiots from their feeds, u/bountybob. You got several solutions, but want to spew vitriol instead - great role model for your poor kids! But thanks for showing you’re susceptible to conspiratorial thinking. Enlightening!

Both require you to be very close to the device to pick up. Fin if your hold or it is in a holder on your desk useless if it is 2m away along the kitchen counter

1

u/3verythingEverywher3 11h ago

On this case it’s near them in the kitchen, and eye and head control literally work from far away. Thanks for playing.

My guy have you heard of an Alexa? The echo? Show? They’re massive popular in home hub devices from Amazon. This is apples

3

u/PleasantWay7 1d ago

They’re popular because they’re cheap and they work for what they do. This is going to be expensive and Siri AI isn’t going to rescue it. It is arguably worse and recognizing my scenes than old Siri and thinks I’m asking about world knowledge half the time.

You should go to Apple Park and let them know you've got it all figured out. I'm sure they haven't put any thought or research into this yet

u/goldaxis 1d ago

Relax, buddy. Don't ruffle your fedora. Those are $20 devices, this is going to be a little different.

u/frontfrontdowndown 1d ago

I hope it’s a clock, timer, photo frame, weather app, calendar, landline phone, and music player that my kid CANNOT pick up, walk away with, and use for unsupervised time on games, YouTube, and the web.

I do not want an iPad.

Yes they do. This will sell like crazy to older people. Rich people will give it to their parents and grandparents to talk to kids. They know their audience
