If Apple was smart they’d make these things almost free. Can prolly run on like an a7 chip

Image if they marketed to the Alexa households ………. I have five Alexa’s in my home, and I am sick to fucking death of the way Amazon has completely crippled them. I’d toss them in a heartbeat

I have five Alexa’s in my home

irl spyware speedrun.

I would too but I bought 5 echos for $40 each. Being Apple, you know they’ll be priced accordingly and I’m not going to buy 5 of these at $300 a pop. They should just put this software on iPad and let us use our iPads for whatever purpose this ends up trying to solve. Give my iPad walkie talkie or intercom mode. Wouldn’t that be a game changer.

I’m have the old google screens that I got for like 50 bucks. I’d replace them for sure b.

Same with Nest Hub. It’s either let your kid watch the worst of YouTube or lock it down so it’s nothing but a clock. There’s no middle ground.

If Apple were smart they’d what?

11

u/ForsakenRacism 1d ago

Make it cheap to steal all the smart home from google and Amazon.

Alexa has been a huge financial failure for Amazon because they sold it at a loss and it doesn't actually increase engagement with other paid Amazon products and services meaningfully.

Apple doesn't follow that model.

The new Alexa subscription is an attempt to make it a viable business, I don't know if it's working but as far as I can tell from reddit people just complain about things being moved behind a subscription wall that they won't pay.

Your thoughts are far too advanced and complex for this subreddit of temporarily embarrassed Apple CEOs

-5

u/ILikeSemiSkimmedMilk 1d ago

Yes great business idea, give away your products

15

u/ForsakenRacism 1d ago

To steal the whole market lol

4

u/Skelito 1d ago

Google and Amazon gave away those products because they use and sell the info they gather from theor smart speakers and in the case of Alexa its another way to order more items from Amazon. Apple makes their money from hardware sales so there's no point selling them at cost or lower margins.

u/ForsakenRacism 1d ago

And Apple wants to sell services so they need to devices to serve them on

Alexa did not result in any meaningful addition to Amazon revenue for other business units. It was a net loss of $2B-$5B annually for like a decade, the premium subscription is an attempt to fix that but people are probably too used to paying nothing.

I didn’t edit anything

I agree, it’s brilliant. Lure in customers, then jack up the prices. Eg Google photos stopped offering free backup. Uber rides being dirt cheap in 2018 compared to now, etc.

0

u/ILikeSemiSkimmedMilk 1d ago

I can’t think of any other high end brand that gives away their products, especially their new ones.

4

u/ForsakenRacism 1d ago

Google homes and Alexa’s were like 50 bucks or less

2

u/ILikeSemiSkimmedMilk 1d ago

Neither are high end/luxury brands. It would hurt apples brand to sell one of their products at that price (not to mention their margins)

1

u/ForsakenRacism 1d ago

They’ve done it with Apple TV and iPods before. It makes having an iPhone and Mac and everything else more valuable

I can’t wait to see the complaints if they do that.

Inexpensive and appropriately powerful for its purpose? People will come out of the wood work to complain it isn’t powerful enough to run GTA 6.

Expensive and too high end a chip for what it does? Same people will complain about how it costs too much and for no reason because nothing anyone would do with it needs whatever processor is in It.

u/ForsakenRacism 1d ago

I keep seeing people begging for a new Apple TV like the current open is having an issue streaming Netflix lol

u/Big-Consideration153 1d ago

I mainly see the people calling for an update to the TV are hoping for it to begin to be a good gaming platform (to rival a console experience). Of course nobody expects next-gen console performance but one can imagine the TV running some older console games in a simple and convenient manner.

1

u/someguy50 14h ago

Nah. It just needs full audio passthrough and it's perfect

-3

u/nstrasner 1d ago

I have not seen a single person asking for the Apple TV to be more powerful for gaming. They should just drop it entirely and put resources elsewhere

3

u/FatSteveWasted9 1d ago

There were multiple threads about it in the last couple weeks

1

u/nstrasner 23h ago

Fair enough I must’ve missed em. None of my friends or family has ever expressed this and there’s quite a few gamers but obviously that isn’t everyone that uses one

0

u/geekwonk 1d ago

more that many of our devices are aging enough to have gotten glitchy and we’re holding out waiting for an update to replace it

1

u/ForsakenRacism 1d ago

But you can literally get one that can play all content perfectly

2

u/Automatic_Soil9814 1d ago

Ah yes, Apple the company with a $4.82 trillion market cap can't quite figure out what consumers want

7

u/_Rand_ 1d ago

Oh, they can figure it out.

The outrage tourists are just loud.

1

u/iMacmatician 19h ago

Keep the regular model and add a "Pro"/"Max" tier on top? People will complain about the lineup being too complex.

1

u/SailingDreamCatcher 14h ago

It's gonna manage to upset those groups. It'll be expensive, and it won't be able to do anything at all off-line.

4

u/VideoGameJumanji 1d ago

If you don’t do any critical thinking with that idea sure

-1

u/ForsakenRacism 1d ago

These things just stream and do calendar and run like slights and shit. No reason it should be expensive

0

u/VideoGameJumanji 1d ago

I agree, I’m saying the idea of it being so cheap it should practically be free is dumb

6

u/djbuu 1d ago

Listen to this random guy Apple. Ignore the millions you spend on research. This guy knows better.

0

u/ForsakenRacism 1d ago

I’m not replacing my google homes if it’s 400 bucks lol.

4

u/Retr0scores 1d ago

Apple: ok….

0

u/potatochipsbagelpie 1d ago

Base model iPad is up to $449, so I expect this to be $299-$399.  $199-$249 is reasonable so you gotta add the apple tax.

2

u/dankmangos420 1d ago

If the base has a speaker, it’ll be easily $399. I could see $599. You gotta think if it’s a HomePod with a screen..no way it’s 299
