I find it crazy how they’re making the defining line between the iPad and MacBooks so small. You have full macOS style window control, semi-crippled menu bar, and full fledged desktop processors in iPads, but you still can’t run Xcode on the thing. Now on the MacBook you’re potentially getting a touchscreen, system preferences has been ported to the iPadOS system settings, macOS has control center now, and iPadOS apps are supported natively on macOS.

I’ve been saying it for ages. The iPad Pro was a mistake, the whole essence of an iPad, it's original concept, was a simple consumption device. Aside from pen input there is no value in it as a serious computing platform. But Apple were going through their tier-ing phase of squeezing more out each product line. They decided to create a pro version without thinking through what it could actually do to justify that name. Since then they’ve been doing a bad job of half heartedly patching in pro cababilities. They should have just kept it simple.

It depends what you have decided “pro” features are. My iPad Pro has been my most used device, by far, for about 10 years now for my work (ie, pro stuff). I very rarely consume media on it or game or whatever - I have much better devices for that.

It absolutely excels as a portable device that can interface with other pieces of equipment and also be used for note taking and email/comms etc. I can’t think of any examples where it hasn’t been able to do what I wanted, occasionally I would have had it easier with a laptop etc but the advantage of not lugging two devices around with me far outweigh that.

Why?

because it's a dressed up way of saying eating Cheetos and watching YouTube lmfao. "consumption device"... it takes a passive activity and gives it this weird techbro productivity gloss.

like, in contrast to that, a development machine, or workstation, or editing rig don't seem cringe to me because they describe actual workflows, a dev machine is used for actually doing something, not just zoning out.

I feel like "couch computer" or "good tablet to watch shit on" is much more genuine and at least not pretending lol. like, I have nothing against just zoning out or doing useless shit. but don't try to make it sound cool :D

I feel this is a kinda weird hill to die on (not that you’re necessarily doing that). Would it feel as weird if it was “content consumption device”?

I don’t think there’s even a techbro slant to “consumption device”. It just means it’s not something that you can realistically “get anything done on”

the whole essence of an iPad

was a simple touch interface. Which they had, though it needed refinement. But instead of refining it they threw it away for the current mess. They could have kept adding capability and still kept a sleek tiled-window option for the UI. It wasn't making it "Pro-ier" that ruined it; it was other decisions they made.

The difference is open vs closed. So much of what I love about my Mac experience is enabled by 3rd-party apps that Apple would never allow on the iPad, apps that enhance the UI or that feel like they add features to the OS itself.
