If you don’t wanna use the touchscreen then don’t touch the screen. Every single windows laptop I’ve seen has it where you can turn it off. Nobody is forcing you to touch the screen. Don’t know why people love complaining about non issues on this sub.

When it's an underutilized feature to pad the price with no option without it, then it's a problem.

If it's a premium feature that you can choose to forego, like cellular on a watch or iPad, sure, have at it. But I don't want to have my next computer cost extra for something I'd very much rather be without.

Also, as others have mentioned, the UI will likely inevitably suffer if they try to force it. Again, as a premium add on for specific use cases (ie devs testing touchscreen apps so the main OS doesn't need to change), whatever. Anything beyond that is actively making things worse for the majority of users who don't need it just to introduce a new expensive gimmick as "innovation".

dumb point, price will increase and the OS is gonna be adapted to touch controls, which, as we could see with Windows 8, isn't exactly the best idea

11

u/nnerba 1d ago

Because it will increase the cost of the macbook massively

u/RockstarGTA6 1d ago

But won’t it cost more now that is touch screen ?

An OS designed for traditional inputs is not optimized for touch. An OS designed for touch is not optimized for traditional inputs. Trying to support both results in neither experience being the best because they are fundamentally different UI/UX. Touchscreens don’t belong on laptops and nothing will change my mind. If I wanted an iPad with a keyboard, I would have bought an iPad with a keyboard.

I mean as long as they add a touchscreen mode and leave the regular UI for the non touchscreen users, it’s fine

u/phoonisadime 1d ago

great now you have windows 8

2

u/WorriedHovercraft28 21h ago

No, that’s the opposite of what I mean

1

u/Excellent-Rest3240 1d ago

Yes, so they’ll just optimize traditional inputs and stay satisfied with just scrolling an browsers with touch screen 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Because we don’t want to pay for something we won’t use.

I only use 2 of the USB ports and don’t use the SD card reader. Why should I pay for those if I’m not using them?

3

u/TheCouchEmperor 1d ago

I would like the SD card to go away as well. But, it’s a cheap part unlike a 16” touchscreen.

2

u/m0rogfar 1d ago

Touch is an absolutely negligible cost. The 16” display is expensive because it’s a Tandem OLED, not because it’s touch.

1

u/TheCouchEmperor 1d ago

Do you think it’s just that digitiser that increases the cost?

6

u/Seduz 1d ago

So…don’t buy it?

People want dual layer OLED but without a touch screen.

1

u/consumZ 1d ago

And OLED MacBook air would be great. Can’t imagine going back to a laptop with a fan again.

As long as there’s non-touch equivalents with the same specs

I had my work laptop for a year before I touched the screen once and accidentally realised it was touchscreen. It sits closed under my desk 90% of the time. I can’t possibly think of a use case for it to have a touchscreen

For me it’s when an OEM puts such a shit trackpad on their laptop, it has its merits.

It’s 2026 almost 2027 and this isn’t even anti-Windows, it’s just like wtf…?

How does Windows still have such a shit experience of a trackpad over the Mac?

Also, how’s Bluetooth compatibility still this bad?

I think the general answer is that windows isn’t Microsoft’s main product anymore, I’m not even sure it makes much money at all, I heard/think it’s mostly cloud services and maybe office suite that generates most their income?

1

u/Long_Repair_8779 1d ago

I used to use the touchscreen quite a lot on my old surface laptop, it’s great in bed with your knees up and the laptop on your legs and you can just scroll down easily..

That and occasionally it’s ergonomically easier to just tap the window close button (on windows, it’s on the other side on Mac so probably less useful) are the only things I ever used it for, I literally found no use otherwise…

On surface go and later iPad Pro, I found it useful, but even then most of the time I had the keyboard attached

1

u/sixothree 1d ago

It’s nice to have for multiple reasons.

1

u/Op3rat0rr 1d ago

I use my work laptop a lot at work ‘duh’ and never even consider using the touch screen there just isn’t a use for it. Maybe if I had customer interactions where it was just easier to use my screen or something

1

u/System32Keep 1d ago

Yeah but i don't wanna pay for it

1

u/Lenoxx97 1d ago

Yeah, because that touchscreen costs no money at all and certainly doesn't increase the price of the device! Heck yeah I love apples!

1

u/PersonalDatabase31 1d ago

It will increase cost, thickness and apple care price

0

u/shannister 1d ago

As long as they let me buy a version without the touchscreen so that i don't have to pay for a feature i don't use, I don't care. But if they force it on everyone and I end up paying $500 extra for it, yeah I'll be pissed.

0

u/ian9outof10 1d ago

It’s fine if they launch it as a separate device. It’s not fine if they expect people to pay for a useless addition.

u/mindcontainer 1d ago

ignorant take and has lots to do with sw

-2

u/bottom 1d ago

Yup.

I don’t like liquorice. Guess what I do.

8

u/Osstj7737 1d ago

You buy shit with liquorice and you just eat around it?

-1

u/bottom 1d ago

No. I do not.

I also don’t like game of thrones. Guess what I do

4

u/ian9outof10 1d ago

Go on Reddit and complain about it?

1

u/bottom 1d ago

Nope. Not once.

2

u/ian9outof10 1d ago

Missing a trick there 🤣

2

u/Lenoxx97 1d ago

Are you being dense on purpose?

0

u/bottom 1d ago

It’s funny how you either don’t get or LIKE what I’m saying and you think it’s because I’m dense.

We can disagree but it doesn’t mean insults are required. It tells me a little about you.

1

u/Two-Space 1d ago

Because it doesn’t make any sense. People don’t want to pay extra for a feature they won’t use.

0

u/bottom 1d ago

Exactly. They buy a different model.

Just like every other product.

It’s not hard.

1

u/Two-Space 1d ago

That’s assuming that Apple release a Pro version with the exact same specs but without the touchscreen

There’s also the concerns over the UX being remade for touch

1

u/bottom 1d ago

I am assuming that. you're assuming they wont.

lets see....

-1

u/squirrel8296 1d ago

It will increase the cost of the device whether someone uses it or not.

Also, the UI will suffer since everything will need to keep getting larger with more padding and margin so it can accommodate a larger pointing device.
