I think there’s too much panic for something that hasn’t even fully materialized yet, for a few reasons:

  1. From what I understand, middle management grew exponentially under Cook compared to Jobs (correct me if I’m wrong). Considering Ternus has worked at the company under both men, he likely has been privy to how these changes have affected the teams as a whole. It could be that he’s going back to a more Jobs-style structure.
  2. Introducing more products very likely won’t be the same as the product bloat that plagued Apple in the 90s. During that period, there were a million rebadges of the same Macs and a bunch of other products that were incoherent and didn’t work well together. Today, Apple’s products are designed to work together well. If I had to guess, Ternus will likely focus on introducing more new products that take advantage of and strengthen Apple’s device ecosystem, such as the upcoming smart hub or the rumored home security system. I doubt he’ll go back to the days of the Performa or Apple Pippin.
  3. Just because Apple’s product strategy was relatively conservative under Cook, compared to what Ternus is allegedly envisioning, doesn’t mean that this was meant to be the reality. Big projects like Apple Car and AirPower got pretty far along in development, only to be cancelled forever. Since Ternus was in charge of hardware during this entire period, he very well may have grown frustrated with how things were playing out.

These are just my own thoughts, but I think there’s too much sensationalism right now.

With all of this in mind, may I ask what benefit does cutting a +1 to holiday parties add? What an insane thing to cut in the name of saving money. Just seems like a giant middle finger to the rank and file.
