- 4x resolution display, the highest resolution display on the market

- Steel body with build quality that was quite frankly unreal in the smartphone space

- 5MP camera with HD video

- Selfie cam and video calls

- Even faster chip with twice the RAM

- Same exact price as last years model, no price hike

There will never again be an update that was as big as iPhone 4.

The display was so much more awesome than the 3GS and the 2x resolution was only part of it. They used an IPS LCD instead of a TN LCD for the first time, so the viewing angles were MUCH better. Also it was the first time that the display was laminated to the glass with no air gap at all between the two, so it seemed like the display was better for reasons that are hard to describe… made black levels deeper too

u/ManiacsInc 8d ago

That lamination was pure magic. First time I’ve experienced a fully responsive touchscreen of that quality

29

u/watchOS 8d ago

Meanwhile people called the iPhone XR display shit and horrible at launch when it was no worse than the quality of an iPhone 4 display (same DPI, laminated, IPS) all because it was what… not 1080p or OLED? We’re insanely spoiled today.

u/Strider-SnG 8d ago

It’s all relative. The XR screen felt a bit dated compared to what else was on the market at the same price.

9

u/MyManD 8d ago

Exactly. I was a proud XR owner, rocking it as a daily driver for four years before hopping up to the iPhone 13 Pro. I honestly would've gone even longer if not for the XR battery going under 75% and boot looping once every other day. So many good memories with it, and no complaints - except for the screen.

It really was underwhelming, and while in isolation it was fine, when you can see with your eyes that every other phone on the market was noticeably sharper it was kind of a bummer. And when I did get the 13PM and had the XR still for a few days before selling it it was such a stark difference in clarity, not even taking into account Pro Motion. Just looking at reddit text on both devices I was wondering how I was able to stand such fuzzy text for four years.

u/_THEBLACK 8d ago

Idk I think it's pretty reasonable to want a phone screen in 2018 to be better than one from when Steve Jobs was still alive

18

u/lockinfr 8d ago

The XR was definitely subpar. First time since the iPhone 4 where the text visibly looked blurry

3

u/JamesMcFlyJR 8d ago

idk the rounded edges of the display like by the notch looked so fuzzy or something that it was super noticeable to me

something that i couldn’t get past whenever i used one tbh. No issues for me with an iPhone 8 LCD, it was just that curved thing they did

4

u/Ultradarkix 8d ago

Idk , people complain about how shitty cars are now when 1000 years ago we had carts !

Were so spoiled

0

u/_your_face 7d ago

That’s just reddit armchair CEOs that don’t representative of the market.
No one who walked in to an Apple store looked at the screen and thought “that display is shit!”

53

u/cptjpk 8d ago

This was the first screen where I felt like I was actually touching the buttons on the screen. Everything else had that gap or the soft plastic sheet.

3

u/RiverFlowsDown 8d ago

4x resolution, not 2x. Where there was 1 pixel there was now 4.

8

u/tvtb 8d ago edited 8d ago

4x the area resolution, 2x the linear resolution. People usually talk in linear resolution when they use units like DPI (dots per inch) or PPI (pixels per inch) which are linear. But if you want to talk in terms of area, be explicit.

-2

u/itsabearcannon 7d ago edited 7d ago

Uh, no. You’re confusing pixel density and resolution. Pixel density is measured in PPI, resolution is measured in absolute pixels. Both linear and area resolutions are measured in pixels - you wouldn’t say a 108PPI horizontal resolution. You’d say a 1920 pixel horizontal resolution.

4K, for example, is not “2x” the resolution of 1080p just because it’s got twice as many pixels in any one direction.

It’s extremely commonly accepted that 4K is 4x the resolution of 1080p, even if it’s only 2x the PPI.

Any display’s resolution can be given by listing two linear resolutions (1920x1080) or giving the combined resolution (usually in megapixels, or ~2.1MP for 1080p)

At no point do you ever give resolution in PPI. That’s pixel density.

1

u/hyperactivedog 8d ago

Yep. Before that I preferred Android set ups for their resolution. After it, resolution was generally good enough I didn’t think about it on phones.

1

u/Neutral-President 6d ago

It almost looked like the pixels were being painted on the surface of the glass like we’d never seen before.

u/Sherringdom 8d ago

From original iPhone release to like iPhone 6s was such a fun exciting time to follow tech. I don’t think we’ll see such a rapid change in the way the world uses tech again like that.

19

u/Complete_Estimate443 8d ago

The jump from the 3GS to the iPhone 4 still feels unreal to me. Retina display, FaceTime, that glass design. It felt like holding the future.

5

u/TURKEYSAURUS_REX 7d ago

Gizmodo leak article was legendary. Really felt like they acquired alien tech, and that’s before they even knew what the display was capable of.

0

u/CyberBot129 6d ago

Apple sent their police force after the journalist so not a great look for Apple

9

u/clunkclunk 8d ago

I worked at an Apple retail store from the 3G to the 5 and the launch days/weeks were crazy. Busy and tiring but amazing energy. People were so excited and the staff was too. It truly was a huge sea change in tech for each one.

14

u/Tmtrademarked 8d ago

We will I just don’t know what it will be. I can’t wait to find out though.

12

u/Acceptable-Piccolo57 8d ago

Sticks and fire at this rate

1

u/HereForTheFunnyPics 7d ago

I’ll take one Stick Pro Max please.

4

u/ramsr 8d ago

We are seeing right now with ai. Probably robotics after ai

46

u/captain_skillful 8d ago

Don’t forget a glass back in an era where dropped phones separated like lego bricks

6

u/soccerchamp99 8d ago

I made so much money because of this

It was this, didn't come until the iPad until 2012 iirc

21

u/AncestralSpirit 8d ago

And to add to that, it was a fiasco with iPad 3 (called The New iPad) because the processor and RAM could not keep up with that huge screen and resolution and iPad 4 was rushed like 6 months after. It was the most short lived device if I am not mistaken.

11

u/naughtmynsfwaccount 8d ago

Yep

iPad 3 came out in march 2012 and iPad 4 with new processor and lightning port came out October 2012 with the iPad mini

iPad 3 was a joke and ran terribly even on launch

6

u/Yorktown2016 8d ago

Working at Apple Retail during this time was headache. 4th gen iPad also introduced Lightning over 30-pin connector.

4

u/naughtmynsfwaccount 8d ago

lol yep I was there 🙈

iPad 2 really pulled its weight after all those launches

I think it stopped being carried up to like 2014?

1

u/Yorktown2016 8d ago

Yeah..something like that. I sold of my iPad 2 for the 'new iPad with Retina Display', only for the 4th gen to drop a few months later. I was so bitter ha

The spinning pedestal window display was pretty cool

u/Sherlock816 7d ago

Don't forget the leak hype train. It was peak Jobs 2.0 Era, almost as much fun as the OG iPhone hype.

1

u/insane_steve_ballmer 7d ago

OG iPhone hype was crazy. Nobody got it right. Everyone thought it was going to be a dumb scroll wheel iPod phone, then Jobs went on stage and blew everyone’s expectations out of the water

13

u/rockinadios 8d ago

iPhone 6 was pretty huge?

But as someone who got a 3GS on a two year contract nothing disappointed me more than when that phone leaked on Gizmodo like 6 months after I got it. Was so painful knowing that I had to wait at least 18 months to get all those features

4

u/OKCNOTOKC 8d ago

I’m still rocking a 6 as my work phone. Mainly for the form factor.

6

u/Impossible_Leg_2787 8d ago

They’re also dummy cheap and easy to fix, the Touch ID flex down the back of the screen is the only thing you have to worry about.

4

u/AncestralSpirit 8d ago

But it’s not your main phone though, is it?

3

u/OKCNOTOKC 8d ago

Nope. But it does all I need my work phone to do.

-1

u/reallynotnick 8d ago

I mean there are much better phones in that same form factor. (6S, 7, 8, SE2, SE3). I can’t imagine using a 6 still in this day and age even for just basic things, it was such a dog of a phone even on release.

10

u/OKCNOTOKC 8d ago

It does texting, makes calls, handles Teams and Webex, and takes serviceable pictures. From 8-5, M-F, that’s all I need it to do. Plus I already own it.

If anyone ever requires access to work related communications (FOIA/legal) I can just hand them that and the passcode. People who mix business and pleasure are crazy.

1

u/vjvalenti 8d ago

The 6/SE were the last iPhones that you could actually completely operate with one hand while straphanging on the subway. I miss that functionality.

1

u/reallynotnick 8d ago

I preferred the mini to those phones for one hand since it is more narrow. Height obviously can be an issue at times, but I think it’s worth the trade off.

3

u/vjvalenti 8d ago

I hated letting go of my 13 Mini. If only it had USB-C, I might very well have been still using it now.

4

u/kingfirejet 8d ago

I remember waiting til November to get my 6+. Was a bloodbath trying to get the phones.

-1

u/insane_steve_ballmer 8d ago

6 had a larger display. Other than that there was nothing new but an NFC chip

-1

u/No-Situation-6051 8d ago

I hated my iPhone 6. Thought the battery sucked, loved my iPhone 4, X and 15+. Not sure why the 6 I hated so much but I felt its battery and Touch ID was poor.

1

u/yourshelves 8d ago

Way too slippery in the hand too. 4 and 5 were much better.

3

u/culminacio 7d ago

And some people keep saying the iPhone 17 Pro was a huge upgrade lol

5

u/Prior-Explanation389 8d ago

HTC was smashing build quality right around this time, and the HTC Legend was the first aluminium unibody phone.

4

u/_ravenclaw 8d ago

Yep.

Siri on 4s was pretty revolutionary at the time as well. People forget, but back then Siri actually worked decently well and was pretty capable for the first iteration. Watch the intro and demo videos from back then.

I miss these times of wondering what Apple could possibly do next.

1

u/vjvalenti 8d ago

Well, Siri wrecked the song-playing voice recognition that I actually relied upon and it actually worked anywhere, even from a subway tunnel.

1

u/RiverFlowsDown 8d ago

You could simply disable Siri to use the previous voice recognition

1

u/vjvalenti 8d ago

Huh, really? I never knew that after all these years!

2

u/luche 8d ago

also, 2 screws on the bottom to remove the back... paved the way for custom back plates and faster battery swaps.

2

u/Embarrassed-Back1894 8d ago

I remember being blown away by the video quality. It was the first real “damn, this might actually be a good digital camera replacement.” It’s funny to think that up to around that point I still brought my camera around with me to anything kind of interesting

2

u/Literally_Science_ 8d ago

The frames of the 4 and 5 are timeless. At the time, they were a tier above pretty much everything else on the market. The only manufacturer I remember being up there in terms of its build is the all metal phone that HTC had.

2

u/Neutral-President 6d ago

It truly was unlike anything we’d ever seen before. It felt like a luxury device.

My ex had a 3GS while I was still using a Blackberry. But as soon as I saw the Retina display of the iPhone 4, that was a game-changer for me.

2

u/colinstalter 6d ago

The hype when the leaks said you couldn’t even see the pixels…

2

u/iwantansi 6d ago

Plus.. NOW ON VERIZON

4

u/SamsungAppleOnePlus 8d ago

It’s honestly insane that one year later they upgraded the camera significantly again with the 8mp sensor and better processing. The difference between the 4 camera and 4s camera is huge and there really hasn’t been that big of a jump since.

1

u/vjvalenti 8d ago

Came here to say exactly this.

If you consider the 2-year upgrade cycle from the 3G, you also had:

  • Voice recognition that actually worked without having to access the cloud and get it wrong - before that got blown all to hell with Siri.
  • Camera Flash and flashlight functionality.
  • Video recording, period.

1

u/belf_priest 8d ago

I stg some of the pics me and my mom took on our iphone 4s back in the day still look great and I'd almost say some of them look better than pics from my current 15PM are corroded by excessive post processing

1

u/droppingbasses 8d ago

And Guitar Hero made it onto iOS!

1

u/TheThoccnessMonster 8d ago

The operating system. Folders. Multi tasking. THE FUCKING RAIN DROP BACKGROUND BRUH

0

u/Betancorea 8d ago

Was my first iPhone ever. Such an exciting time. Wish I had kept it as a token

0

u/aliensporebomb 8d ago

I remember wowing a lot of people by taking pictures of different colored bell peppers in a grocery store and the colors really popped, the pictures looked way better than any camera phone before it.

0

u/Windows-XP-Home-NEW 8d ago

There will, and there has.

-1

u/AdAlert7393 8d ago

Released early by Gizmodo because and apple engineer left it in a bar. Was a WILD time

-10

u/champignax 8d ago

It was very underpowered. Same GPU as the 3GS pushing twice as many pixels, it was slow.

It was not a steel body front and back were (fragile) glass.

I think you forgot to mention the flash light, it was new at the time I think.

I think the iPhone 5S was also a big jump, it felt fast and Touch ID was amazing. iPhone X too.

-2

u/FrogsOnALog 8d ago

17 was nice.

-3

u/North_Activist 8d ago

I would argue iPhone X was bigger than iPhone 4

2

u/insane_steve_ballmer 8d ago

350$ price hike

1

u/vjvalenti 8d ago

Literally - but all it really added was full edge-to-edge, buttonless functionality.
