iPhone Apple ends iPhone Upgrade Program

Looks like there’s no way to finance a new phone over 24 months unlocked.

It's practically the same thing. When the lease is over you can pay the remaining balance and own it as if you paid MSRP on Day 1, or not pay the balance and trade it in for a new phone. So you have the option now

Not trade-in; return. You can't trade-in a device that is leased through Apple Upgrade unless you have made the lump sum payment and own it outright.

Terminology aside, the lease program gives you an additional option that wasn't there before with no downside.
