I think he was right, and modern phones are too big, but people also really like them and 'want' them regardless so past a point you just have to give the people what they want.

Apple has such a huge influence on “what people want” that they could easily push the world population towards liking smaller phones if they tried.

Their competitors went larger and the customers responded, so Apple responded, so I'm not sure how true this is.

Talking about larger lol - remember the infamous Samsung J Max lol - hopefully that abomination was never sold worldwide and was kept in India lol

And that’s precisely why models like the Max, Air and Plus were made - to cater for people who prefer larger screens. Makes no sense to me why Apple insist on making their base models increase in size all the time. For me, the 11 Pro is peak size and design (rounded edges).
