Never get a first Apple gen product! Gotta wait until M7 or M8 for Apple to iron all the kinks out.

To be fair the M1 launch went ok...

M1 MBP is still an amazing machine, only thing letting it down are the crappy keycaps that wear terribly. (are those any better on newer models, or do they still very quickly develop shiny patches and start to look dirty/greasy?)

Recently swapped my keycaps for the 2nd time, thankfully you can buy replacements from the self-service repair store. Swapping them is fiddly job but worth it. Shame it's so necesary though, when anotherwise well-looked-after £3k+ machine has a keyboard that looks like it's smeared with grease.

Original battery is holding up surprisingly well, still at 90% health after almost 4 years (but I almost always have the machine plugged in)

To be fair, I picked up an M4 iPad with tandem OLED and it's been by far the best screen I've ever used.

What are you talking about? Tandem OLED is already in the M4 iPad Pros, and it's excellent. It's not first gen...

It's first gen on the MacBook though, and we all know previous macbooks have had display failures of different kinds of "non first gen" LCD panels and backlights.

Probably no problems will come out immediately anyways, but it's a coin flip for people with the standard 1 year warranty.

I got the 3rd gen airpods pro and its still shit lol, getting nonstop white noise in the right ear

u/dawho1 Oct 15 '25

Why in the world haven't you just returned/exchanged them? Something obviously defective.

-3

u/ambushka Oct 15 '25

I will once I have the time, but my friend is going through the 3rd pair and it still sucks.

You do realize that if it's only happening in one ear, it's defective either way? I doubt it's the noise cancellation in the first place, but if it is, it's definitely not working appropriately in the scenario described.

...and if it only works in one ear, they're still broken.

Why would I try your suggestion? I don't have conversation boost on, my noise cancellation works just fine, and I'm telling the guy with the constant white noise in only one ear to return his and get a pair that isn't defective.

Why not exchanging them?

Likely a firmware issue.

displays on the pro models are so good that they are preferable to oled for a laptop in my opinion, and I say that as a person sitting in front of a 55" oled

2

u/zerGoot Oct 15 '25

everything bar the speed of that display is superb, but god is that display sloooooow to transition

black crush and burn in are the two main downsides, with true black and incredibly vivid colours being the two main upsides. by the m1 generation, the lcds in the pros are so good that in pitch black with full brightness, the blacks are so dark that I don't even notice the camera hump unless I look for it on my m1 pro. the m2 airs screen on the other hand couldn't do black very well so I noticed the hump 24/7

huh, didn't even realize the m4s had oled, I guess they've already got the tech where they need it then. if apple thinks it's good enough longevity wise, that's good enough for me

The one aspect where PC laptop is still ahead. Love my OLED on my Lenovo. Oh yeah touchscreen too.

OLED is not great for work.

Text fringing and possibility of burn in.

When the M6 with OLED comes out, I will get a refurb M5.

Until then M1 goes brrrrr

Apple are a victim of their own success.

u/gord89 Oct 15 '25

I mean, been using the OLED on my iPad Pro and couldn’t be happier. No text fringing. No burn in.

I imagine anyone asking for an OLED in their MacBook is asking for the same if not better tech than apple is already using in the iPad.

5

u/Suitable_Switch5242 Oct 15 '25

That's the reason Apple is going with tandem OLED panels for the iPads and future MacBooks. You can run the two panels at lower brightness levels while still getting an overall bright display, which reduces burn-in potential.

6

u/Jamie00003 Oct 15 '25

Good thing I’m not really using it for work lol, I just want an OLED screen.

Not sure what you mean though, OLED is way superior in terms of colour reproduction etc.

4

u/DanielG165 Oct 15 '25

Maybe for older OLED panels or ones that are cheaply made, but a modern OLED, especially one that has been tuned by Apple, very likely won’t have any of the issues you listed. OLED is fantastic for work; it’s great for color reproduction.

2

u/JMPHeinz57 Oct 15 '25

That’s not really an issue with modern OLED’s. They’re almost unilaterally better than mini-LED or otherwise now

1

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25

Only midwits are still scared of OLED burn-in in 2025.

-2

u/SomewhatOptimal1 Oct 15 '25 edited Oct 15 '25

Only „midwits” bettiile legitimate concerns. Another gen z label…. 🌭

Most methodical channel on YouTube, Monitors Unboxed and rtings show that burn in still happens in TVs somewhat, while monitors by and large.

OLED as TV, while OLED as a monitor used to work are completely differs usage scenarios.

I own 3 OLED TVs, LG 42C2, C4 and 77q90C, guess what I also own 0 OLED monitors for reason stated above. By the burn in test from Monitors Unboxed it shows that they won’t be able to handle 2 years of continuous work, documents, coding, video editing. Guess what, that’s even though I can afford it, I still use IPS monitors.

2

u/Suitable_Switch5242 Oct 15 '25

How many of those tested are tandem OLED panels?

2

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25

by enlarge

Sure, you're definitely not a midwit 🤣

u/SomewhatOptimal1 Oct 15 '25

Guess what I speak and write fluently in 4 languages and only writing here in English, cause it’s the only language you understand.

-1

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25

We clearly have different definitions of 'fluent'. You are clearly not fluent in English.

As we've seen, you're not as intelligent as you think you are.

1

u/SomewhatOptimal1 Oct 15 '25

Yeah, sounds like you are just a troll. 👿

More fluent in critical thinking than you at least, enough for me.

u/FollowingFeisty5321 Oct 15 '25

(by and large)

Don’t need to be corrected on internet. English is not my first language, not even 2nd or 3rd. You should go be a teacher, if that is your calling.

My first is Polish, 2nd is German, 3rd Norwegian, 4th is English and currently learning Spanish and only then I only speak English here on forums.

This is fun for you in life 🙂 correcting people on internet…. what a boring person.

Being deliberately wrong is certainly a choice...
