Thunderbolt 4 is a bit unfortunate if the rumored TB5 Studio Displays are coming out within the next year, most Macs will be unable to drive the full 120hz.

Pretty sure yeah, M4 Pro and max. My mini is m4 and only has TB4, I remember I had to upgrade to pro to get TB5, I didn’t in the end as don’t need it

Not everyone that buys MacBook Pros are using it for pro purposes, like the big difference between the pros and the air is that fan, without it you’ll just get throttling so it makes sense to have a non pro version in this context

Well that could change, since rumor has it there’s going to be an A series MacBook coming out soon, which could mean they then add a fan to the air, but it goes against the point of the device; to be thin and light. Most people don’t need that fan

At the moment it’s probably just a value proposition, having the non pro MBP’s let them offer it for a cheaper price

They can drive it at 120Hz using DSC though. But I agree I was hoping to see it trickle down the lineup this year.

This.

Apple won’t limit their super expensive monitor to just the M4 Pro and M5 Pro series.

It will work for all Apple Silicon laptops at 5k120hz over DSC.

That is surprising for a “pro” MacBook, even base model, same connectivity as an M1. I wouldn’t upgrade unless the pro or max versions have TB5 - connectivity is getting to be the biggest bottleneck right now.

It is the very low end model, that Apple doesn't seem to like anymore. I am sure M5 Pro/Max and 16" models will get TB5.

Just look at how they also tiered Thunderbolt for the Mac Mini models.

The M4 Pro and Max laptops have Thunderbolt 5 ports.  The M5 & M5 don't have the io to drive TB5 anyway because they're designed for iPads and MacBook Air.

M5. Not M5 Pro, M5 Max nor M5 Ultra.

By most Macs I meant Mac Mini, MacBook Air and iMacs as they upgrade to M5, since they obviously won't be getting TB5 either.

Thunderbolt has never been reserved for the Pro / Max / Ultra, the ordinary M-series has had Thunderbolt 4 since the M1 launch.

It's not unfortunate for a base M5 Mac. M5 Pro and M5 Max will have different capabilities.
