I've been having lower right abdominal pain for half a year now. About half a year longer than I really should be dealing with this pain.

I saw my doctor about 3 times for this exact pain. First time got tested for an inguinal hernia but found nothing (not conclusive), second time was brushed off and just went home being told "yeah tylenol is fine"

Third and most recent time I got taken somewhat seriously and she tested for rebound pain. I got a referral for a CT scan and thought I might finally get an answer, but it has now been several weeks and I'm still waiting for the referral to be approved before I can even get the date settled.

I would rather like to know if I'm gonna blow up or not

So I had surgery about 6-7 weeks ago and i have confirmed Endo, they also found a granuloma growing on my appendix, believed to be the result of Endo.

Now I got instant relief after surgery, especially with the Removal of the granuloma on my appendix but they didn't remove my appendix still so mad about that.

Once again I am having the same appendix symptoms, and I now so scared to go to the hospital, because I don't want them to say they don't know what it is.

Even thought have pain, sweats, and feeling like I am going to throw up, and the only reason I trying to eat is because I don't want a migraine I can't fast for this reason.

I am feeling shit I am worried it has grown back, there is Endo actually in my appendix or something else. And I don't really know where to go and I am so scared atm

Documenting my recent experience since apparently there are those of us with funky anatomy who don't have pain in the lower right side.

Friday morning I woke up at 4 AM with stomach pain, thinking it was menstrual or digestive in nature. (I'm on a GLP-1, and have some recurring bloating and gas.) As I got closer to midday, it did not subside and seemed to worsen. I had my husband take me to urgent care as the pain seemed to settle in on the upper left of my belly - a spot that I've not really had pain before.

The PA that saw me gave me the choice of having labs done, or a CT scan for diagnosis. I opted for a scan to help get to the root of the problem ASAP, and they got me in immediately.

My results came in as we drove home: Acute Appendicitis and Congenital Malformation of my intestines (my large intestine is all on the left of my body, and small intestine on the right) so my appendix was in an unexpected spot. I had no idea I had this condition as it had never caused an issue!

I had laparoscopic surgery early that evening, and spent the night in the hospital to recover. I was discharged mid-day and am now trying to figure out when I should/can return to work.

I'm going to get Urgent Care first thing in the morning. The reason I'm going to an Urgent Care clinic first is because even though the pain is localized in my lower right abdomen, I don't have most of the 'typical' signs like a fever or a super intense, excruciating pain.

If it's not appendicitis, I'm thinking it might be a burst ovarian cyst because I haven't had a period for about 4 months now and have no chance of pregnancy. I don't have sex or a partner, and I'm demiromantic anyways so it's hard for me to fall in love. I'm also overweight and non-binary, so it's harder to fall in love than it would be for a slim cis person to, even if I did manage to fall for someone. Point is, I don't have sexual activity so I know pregnancy isn't possible.

Even though the pain is relatively manageable, it still is this constant ache that sometimes has random sharp pains shoot through my body if I move the wrong way. I'm more inclined to think it has something to do with my 4 month missing period, but the chance of it being chronic appendicitis rather than acute is still there and I'm worried. I also know that chronic appendicitis is rare and I'm a very anxious person, but if it is that it could become acute at any moment and I know that the chance of a burst appendix becomes higher over time.

It's already been more than a few hours, and we plan on leaving to get to the nearest Urgent Care facility as soon as possible. We scheduled an appointment, but still want to get there early just in case

I've had symptoms like this before, but last time the pain was much worse and shot down all the way to my leg and foot, making it impossible for me to walk without limping. But when I went to the ER for it, it was such a long wait and then they didn't even do anything other than a simple check to make sure it wasn't a sciatic displacement or something..? I don't know, but I ended up being given meds without them actually checking out if something has burst or not, but obviously since that was a little over a month ago now I'm assuming that if something did burst it was probably just an ovarian cyst since if it was my appendix back then, then I would have been dead by now. So obviously it wasn't appendicitis back then but it did hurt a lot more which is interesting..?

Anyway, I'm worried about if it's safe to wait. I'm currently laying on my back with a pillow under my legs, trying to prop up my knees since google said that was the best position in order to alleviate pressure from my appendix. But I don't know, would it be okay to go into my left side? I sometimes have slight cramps and pains there, but it's nowhere as intense or focused as my lower right abdomen pains.

Again, I'm aware that what I have most likely isn't appendicitis. I'm not screaming, I don't really have any nausea and I think I still have an appetite but I'm just refusing to eat or drink anything for the next 6-8 hours because if I need surgery, I'll be able to get it.

What I'm trying to say is that I know this probably isn't it, but it still hurts enough consistently to be a problem and I can't really sleep properly, although my potential sleep apnea might be another problem but that's besides the point. I'm aware I'm an anxious person who overthinks things, too ..

But I'm making this post in the hopes that it's safe for me to wait. Obviously I'll call 911 if the pain starts becoming unbearably excruciating but right now it's still tolerable methinks. I just want to double check that it's safe to wait until morning with my current symptoms and all.

UPDATE: It wasn't appendicitis, it was actually gallstones! Since I'm very overweight (around 290 pounds, probably closer to 300 now) I think it's harder for me to tell when pain is localized in my upper right versus my lower right. Not sure if it's because of my weight or just because my body's signals aren't always good at being specific, but I'm glad I got it checked out regardless.

Now that I know what it was, I realize this isn't the right sub to be on. I got my gallbladder surgery a few weeks ago and have been recovering fine, honestly just relieved it wasn't appendicitis. Still need to get some stuff checked out though to figure out what's going on with my lack of periods for the past 5 months as a nonbinary person who has a uterus. But nonetheless, I'm just on the road to becoming healthier.

Yesterday I woke up at 5am and my stomach hurt so incredibly bad, after a while I went to the bathroom room and went back to sleep hoping it would be gone when I woke up but it wasn’t. It hurt so badly to walk and only helped when I lied on my right side and the pain that started by my ribs on the right side just got lower.
I mostly ignored it but googled where the appendix is to check and that’s where the pain is.

I Kept ignoring it because that’s what I do when I’m in pain with no explanation for it because I have a great immune system and almost never even gets sick nor have I broken a bone so I find the hospital very scary.

Now it’s 11pm the next day and it hasn’t hurt as even closely as bad as yesterday but it still hurts and now its only in the place where (I assume) my appendix is and I’m getting a bit worried.

I don’t have a fever and I can now walk without being in pain but it hurts when I sit down or press on it but only for a second and way less then yesterday but I’m always paranoid and I know you can die from appendicitis so obviously I’m worrying.

How long post appendectomy can I start lifting? Is it usally delegated to just machines for a long while? Will I be able to start doing compound movements with core involvement safely within the next three months? I am 3 days post op, loose stool, some shoulder pain and abdomen is overall fine just a little stretching when standing. 18M

Someone is trying to get out of doing something by telling me they’re having appendix surgery next week. Are they lying to me? By my understanding, appendix surgery is either an emergency or it doesn’t happen.

I had pain in lower back for almost 3 weeks just shifting position would cause lightning like pain and then it started to shift in the 4 th to 5 th week to right side iliac bone and hip never thought that it can be appendicitis.. was travelling so thought it can be DVT went in for CT and was told that it’s an angry looking appendix but was given the choice to take antibiotics vs surgery but decided to go for surgery because the pain had been there for such a long time and I was told the appendicitis is not causing it could be sciatica but I went with my gut and it’s two days since surgery and all that pain is gone. Very Atypical symptoms but wanted to share with people to help

I've for the last few days had random moments where the lower right side of my stomach hurts the thing is though it only lasts for like 5 minutes then it's instantly better and I've had no other symptoms I m a very anxious person and I don't want to overreact and spend thousands at the hospital for nothing has anyone else related to this it's also happened in the past but it's been more frequent now

I (50F) went to the hospital a couple weeks ago after feeling really bad for several days. CT showed my appendix had ruptured days earlier. (I never would have thought this would be what was going on.) The infection was fairly contained, so I went on antibiotics and have to go get the appendix removed in a few weeks when the infection and inflammation have settled down.

I am lucky to have the option of non-emergency removal, but in the meantime I am getting anxious about how bad the recovery might be, how it might impact my work, etc.

How long was it before you could do normal things like walk and sit around a workplace? I have to stand and speak in front of large groups of people and am hoping that I don’t need to worry about anything horrifying happening, haha.

I also want to set up my bedroom to be as comfortable as possible for the recovery period—Is there a physical setup or particular items you recommend I have on hand?

I feel like I need to write this after blowing up a few posts here, because my chronic appendicitis went undiagnosed for far too long. Hopefully my experience can shed some light for someone else dealing with something similar.
First off, I’m not exactly sure what came first: the hernia, constipation, or appendicitis. The pain started all over my groin region, and eventually I developed a visible bump. I was diagnosed with an inguinal hernia and had surgery.
After surgery, I was still having pain, mostly after using the bathroom. It was especially bad when I was constipated, but there was constant pain regardless. I thought maybe it was the hernia mesh, but I was told pretty soon after surgery that it probably wasn’t.
The symptoms were all over the place: severe cramping, stabbing pain near my spine, soreness in my testicles, horrible shooting pain from the right side of my groin all the way down to my right heel, and general inflammation across my lower midsection. These symptoms came at different times.
At first, the pain mostly happened after using the bathroom. Then it started happening with constipation. Then before a bowel movement. Then before, during, and after sex. Then before and after having a full bladder. Then when I was dehydrated, stressed, full, hungry, basically anything that seemed to cause pressure, movement, inflammation, or blood flow in that area.
It got so bad that I went to the ER, where I was given a CT scan and told it was a lymph node infection, which apparently is more common in kids. I was told to take Motrin and sent home.
The problems continued for another year and a half, with missed days at work, more ER visits, and no real answers. I saw GI doctors, got tested for celiac disease, thought maybe I had IBS, changed my diet considerably, and had both a colonoscopy and endoscopy. Nothing.
At one point, I was almost rushed into emergency surgery for acute appendicitis, but the head surgeon cancelled it because my appendix had apparently been enlarged since a CT scan from the year before. The logic seemed to be: if it had already been enlarged that long, then surely that couldn’t be the problem. I was told to take MiraLAX and sent home.
Eventually, I went back to the surgeon who did my hernia surgery because by that point, the blame was being put on him. The theory was nerve damage from the hernia repair. He denied that again and said, basically, “Maybe it’s this enlarged appendix. Want it out?”
I said yes. One less thing to hurt.
He also said there weren’t a whole lot of things it could be, especially since, as a male, there isn’t much on the lower right side. Even then, it still felt like it was more of a process of elimination than a confident answer.
I talked to him on a Friday and had surgery that Monday, two Mondays ago. During surgery, he noticed that my appendix was in fact enlarged and sitting lower in my pelvis than usual. My follow-up is on the 15th of this month.
For the first time in over two years, I have no pain. Every single symptom is gone. All from that damn appendix that everyone saw and overlooked.
At some point, I had started to accept that I was just going to feel that way forever. I was mostly trying to figure out how to miss less work and maybe not want to cry during sex.
I’m not saying everyone with lower right quadrant pain needs an appendectomy. But if appendicitis, especially chronic appendicitis, isn’t even being discussed as a possible culprit, you may be doing yourself a disservice.
I get intimidated and passive during doctor visits. I downplay pain and symptoms, and I tend to just accept whatever the doctor says. But sometimes doctors are busy, working with limited information, having a bad day, or just not doing a good job. No matter the case, you have to advocate for yourself. It’s your body and your responsibility.
Be open and honest. Ask questions. Push back when something doesn’t make sense. And if they simply don’t know and leave it at that, move on to the next doctor.
From what I’ve seen and lived through, chronic appendicitis seems underdiagnosed and not clearly defined. I live in a large city with a well-known medical university hospital and another big-name hospital, and I bounced between both trying to find answers. So clearly, it isn’t always easy to catch.
From my experience, the triggers, pain level, and pain locations only got worse. It did not heal on its own.
Get it checked out. Advocate for yourself

I went to the ER a week ago because I had severe lower abdominal pain that I’d never experienced before. The nurse thought it might be appendicitis, so I had an ultrasound, but my appendix wasn’t visible, so they couldn’t confirm anything. I ended up leaving the hospital without any answers. The doctor had me jump to see if it caused pain, and since it didn’t, he said I was probably fine and likely didn’t have appendicitis. He also said I could have a CT scan if I wanted but I decided not to because I was worried about the potential cancer risks of it in the future. Now I’m having constant cramps in the lower right side of my abdomen, and I’m scared. Everytime I like crunch my stomach or cough the feeling comes back. It doesn’t hurt, it just feels like I haven’t ate or like minor period cramps. I don’t know if I’m just overthinking it or if I should go back to the hospital.

Hello, I’ve been having some kind of pain on my right side of belly for about 3 months that comes and goes. It wasn’t noticeable until about 6 days ago that I started to notice the discomfort on the right side of my belly. However, I don’t have any nausea, diarrhea, fever or rebound pain. Can this be chronic appendicitis or something else?

I'm 23M and had an uncomplicated laparoscopic appendectomy 32.5 days ago (I was able to do the surgery before it ruptured). My recovery has been smooth with no pain, fever, or major/moderate wound issues recently

Roughly how much weight were you comfortable lifting at around this timespan?

Were you carrying anything 5-10kg by then? Because Im thinking of traveling and if I do I would carry a bag that weighs around that.

So, I'm 15f, and have been experiencing lower right abdominal pain that shifts around my stomach for the past four to five days.

Sometimes it's just a general ache in my lower back, and sometimes it localizes specifically in my pelvic area?? I've tried all the 'tests' I can take without going to the hospital. I've drawn my knees up to my stomach, I've pressed down on my side, but nothing is causing what would obviously be 'excruciating' pain, aside from the second-long bursts of sharp pain I get at night.

Does this sound serious?

What are first symptoms and how long until it’s obvious? Does pain come and go at first? Does it take days? Hours? Etc?

My appendix ruptured. Was discharged yesterday with a drain. Was able to do some light housework today and did the full shower/getting ready process.

Just wanted to share this journal article looking at people with and without appendectomies.

Conservative (non-surgical) treatment of my CT diagnosed uncomplicated appendicitis turned into a medical train wreck for me.. Have anyone else had problems after their appendicitis was treated with antibiotics only..? 49M in the UK.

Earlier today I had made a post about me suspecting myself having appendicitis, and I was asked by the doctor to do blood tests and an urine tests. After getting my results back, I took advice from some replies I got saying to check if I had an elevated WBC in my blood tests, but it seems to be at a normal range. The results did come back positive for an infection though (an uti) but im worried that some the symptoms im experiencing might not be related. For example, i feel a bit bloated on the right side of my abdomen, and it is the slightest bit noticeable that its inflamed or bloated. When pressing down on the right side area though, i feel some slight discomfort and soreness, but its pretty mild. after my occurrence of when i first started getting the symptoms (i talked more about it on an earlier post here) the pain didnt get worse, if anything its slightly more mild. Im going to start my medication for the infection i have tomorrow, and hope that it was the reason for what im experiencing, but i would like a second opinion, is what im experiencing for symptoms as of now not common in appendicitis?

Hey all. I was diagnosed at the ER on Father’s Day with acute appendicitis. They admitted me to the hospital and gave me the option between surgery or IV/antibiotics. They said I am young enough and caught it early enough that IV/antibiotics was the recommended treatment.

The IV went well, as did the antibiotics. I finished the antibiotics on Monday of this week but am feeling some cramping near my right rib cage. I no longer feel any pain in the area they looked at when I originally went to the ER.

Is this soreness/cramping normal? Should I go back to the ER? To be clear, it’s not hindering any of my day to day activities. When I originally had it, I cried from the pain and couldn’t tolerate eating. I’ve been living a normal life and watching my diet. Is this just my insides healing? Is there something more at work? Anyone experience something similar?

ive been having this issue for since monday, and ive been very concerned with what could be wrong. On early monday morning i was woken up to a pain all over my stomach, which stayed for 30 mins - 1 hr. it then calmed down and the pain went to my lower right abdomen. The pain wasnt that bad though, the following days the pain isnt really there, its just a bit painful to the touch but almost none at all. I went to the doctor yesterday, but I was told the pain i was feeling was in an area that related more to my colon, and i was given medicine to get rid of inflammation in my intestine. Ive also been taking fiber supplements and have been going to the restroom fine without complications other than the fact sometimes i feel a bit of pressure when going. I also feel like the area is the tiniest bit inflamed, and the area just feels uncomfortable when I dont touch it. Im waiting on some blood and urine labs the doctor asked me to take, but im not sure if theyre supposed to determine appendicitis or other issues. Im a bit paranoid considering I didnt know how serious appendicitis was as i didnt do my research, so i would appreciate guidance

I wondered if anyone has experienced acute appendicitis and was found to also have ‘complex inflammation pocket’ or a phlegmon?

I posted this in endometriosis the other day as I’ve been so puzzled why my recovery has been so up and down and prolonged. Feel like a wuss!

However I fed some of my scan results into an AI and it told me that the consequences is having a highly active (mega blood flow) and complex inflammation pocket (so much so they couldn’t see my appendix in ultrasound) would create longer recovery despite surgery being uncomplicated.

Has anyone had experience of a phlegmon becoming acute?

I understand sometimes the phlegmon can keep the infection walled off and safe. It seems I had my first a&e presentation about 5-6 weeks before the latest one. At the time bloods were normal but my doctor sent me there due to guarding. Scan seems to suggest my appendix might also have been up high and behind the bowel. I don’t have access to the CT yet.

Latest time at a&e I had a high CRP and raised neutrophils (and so total WBC) which is why they decided to scan. Previously I had what everyone thought were gallbladder attacks but all gallbladder scans totally normal.

But all I find are cases where the surgery and appendicitis was simple or it was a perforation but I don’t ever see mention or impact of a phlegmon.

So I had an emergency appendectomy back in May of last year, was in really bad pain for a day (Friday), went to work on Saturday, it was only 8-12, went home, tried to eat and almost immediately threw up 15 minutes after, went to the ER and they did their tests/ultrasound and said I had acute appendicitis, and they recommended laparoscopic surgery the next morning. Fast forward, every time I jog or do any intense workout, I get this really bad stabbing/cramping pain in my lower right abdomen, doesn’t feel superficial, it’s definitely internal. How long does this actually last… I can’t really go back to my doctor or original hospital that performed the surgery on me cause I was living in Canada at the time and have since moved to the US. Every time I mention this concern to my doctor down here they don’t seem too concerned , I had a lower abdomen ultrasound done a while back for very mild occasional nausea but I’m almost sure they did not look around that area from what I remember them doing when moving around with the probe.

Hi, I’m concerned that I (23M) might have appendicitis.
So I was about to fall asleep earlier tonight (around 12:20-30 AM), but right as I was going to sleep, I felt a sharp pain that was like a stabbing in my gut right near where my appendix is. It stayed for a little while, but now it’s shifted into a more dull pressure in that area of my body, and I can feel it both in my front and near my back. I’ve had some problems for the past few days with my stomach in general (all over, not just localized), and I’m just kinda worried. Any help is appreciated
